About the Item
Original artwork on linen by established Australian painter Tim Snowdon.
Snowdon's 2022 exhibition ‘Conversations’ references the way inanimate objects ‘speak to’ each other within still life compositions and can appear animate or to ‘take on a life of their own’.
Snowdon gained invaluable experience living in New York, London then Paris, supporting himself by painting and decorating. In 1990 he earned a permit as a copyist in the Louvre. A long tradition dating back to just after the French Revolution where each year 250 permits are granted to amateur and professional artists, allowing them to copy the works of Old Masters. The masterpiece of Tim’s choice was Philippe de Champaigne’s “Le Christ Mort”.
Tim Snowdon's work is held in private collections in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Belgium. He was a semi-finalist in the 2022 Moran Prize (Australia). And a finalist in the 2021 Moran Prize (Australia).
Tim works from his home studio in the historic village of Bungendore in the Southern Tablelands district of New South Wales, Australia.

With its mostly white tones and intricate, textured background, this work is nearly a complete departure from the artist’s other paintings. Although it is executed in a powerful chiaroscuro from a classical point of view, the counterpoint of contemporary objects with the vibrant colors make this painting distinctly modern. - Grapes and French CheeseLocated in Woodbury, CTOil on panel, signed and dated 2001. French wooden frame in ivory with gold leaf. Unframed size: 19.7 inches high x 23.6 inches wide. Framed size: 26.4 inches high x 30.5 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Sold framed. The first Eyckmans’ painting to employ a brighter, golden palette, this everyday kitchen scene explores the differing textures of the objects within. The artist’s love of all things French is exemplified here with antique pottery, a starched linen tablecloth, breadboard and, of course, fruit and favorite cheeses. Note the superb shadowing of the board extending over the table, the detailing in the chèvre and paper wrapping to the left, and the asymmetrical cluster of stemmed Muscat grapes, all illuminated by easterly light. Classical in perspective and execution, but with a more contemporary feel that derives from the use of color and light, this painting marks a transformational point in the artist’s work. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...Category
