'Theatre in the Park' French School (circa 1930s)

circa 1930s

About the Item

'Theatre in the Park' gouache on art paper, French School (circa 1930s, signature unknown). A charming vignette of costumed performers in an open air theatre delights the viewer. There is something akin to the work of Marc Chagall in this depiction. Perhaps it is the dreamlike imagery and the colour palette used by the artist. We can say for certain that it transports the viewer to a better place and would cheer up a needy niche in any home or workspace. Overall, the piece is in good condition having been recently cleaned by an art restoration specialist. The work has been newly framed and is glazed with anti-reflective glass. The work is signed in the upper left hand however the handwriting is undecipherable. It was acquired in the South of France near Montpellier. Upon request a video of the piece may be provided. 'Sailors in Marseille', gouache on art paper, French School (circa 1960s). Ever since the 6th century, there have been fishermen selling their catch in the Old Port of Marseille while sailors from visiting vessels have always enjoyed a night on the town. Today the Old Port is the city’s beating heart, a vital part of Marseille. In this work, the artist depicts a solo French sailor crossing paths with his American counterpart. The Frenchman sports his cap with iconic pom pom rouge while the American sailor is dressed in his white 'Cracker Jack...

  • Notre Dame de Paris II
    By Lucien Génin
    Located in London, GB
'Notre Dame de Paris II', gouache on paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). One of two paintings of Notre Dame by this artist held by our gallery, it is also an absolutely charming and now, historic depiction from the 1930s, of the most famous cathedral in France. This version uses more exaggerated brushstrokes with strong colours attesting to its expressionist roots. Notre Dame is one of the most widely recognised symbols of the city of Paris and the French nation. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris. Approximately 12 million people visit Notre-Dame annually, making it the most visited monument in the city. While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage. The government of France hopes the reconstruction can be completed by Spring 2024, in time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Unlike the actual cathedral, this artwork is in good condition, is newly framed and glazed and signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre. Génin befriended the painters Frank Will, Gen Paul, Émile Boyer, Marcel Leprin...

  • View of the Ovo Castle in the Moonlight, a 19th century Neapolitan gouache
    Located in PARIS, FR
Neapolitan gouaches appeared in the eighteenth century when tourism in the Naples area was developing: the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii made this city a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour, the journey made by wealthy Europeans to complete their education. Generally small in size for ease of transport and affordable in price, these gouaches were the ideal travel souvenir that these tourists of the early days were bringing back to capture the idyllic landscapes they had discovered during their journey and to share them with family and friends upon their return at home. The Bay of Naples and the eruptions of Vesuvius are the favourite themes of these views. Here we have a view of the Ovo Castle, which was rebuilt on the island of Partenope, in the middle of the Bay of Naples and about a hundred metres from the shore by the Normans in the 12th century on antique ruins...
