Alex Sher
Brushstroke - underwater photograph series REFLECTIONS - archival pigment 19x35"

2017

About the Item

In a delicate smear of faded blues intermingled with the curves and lines of the pale colors of the skin, Alex Sher’s “Brushstroke” uncovers his phenomenal ability to capture the transient brushstrokes of nature. “Brushstroke” is a part of Alex Sher’s popular series REFLECTIONS - underwater photographs that could be almost mistaken for abstract paintings as they bring up recollections of masterpieces by Picasso, Dali or Gustav Klimt. In fact REFLECTIONS are straight photographic capturing of the water’s surface from below, with a submerged underwater camera. The photographs freeze natural momentary reflections in water surface - the unique kaleidoscopic fragmentations of human body into nearly unrecognizable forms. It is these bold accents of color, mesmerizing textures, dramatic lines, and distinctive distortions that make Sher’s works unique highly advisable masterpieces. In the speckled darkness of his waters, the nude feminine body becomes a beacon, a flash, a sensual streak of light. Just as his camera captures the fleeting moment of these chaotic reflections, the image that remains illuminates the transient nature of time itself. Original gallery quality print signed by the artist. Digital archival pigment print on archival paper with metallic finish. Paper size: 18" x 24" Image size: 13" x 24" Limited edition of 24 The artwork is furnished with certificate of authenticity, signed by artist with artist's name, edition number, edition limit, and other details. Sher was born in Ukraine and moved to United States with his family in 1995. Sher started showing his photographs in the early nineties in Kiev, Ukraine. He was considering himself an emerging artist until one of his pieces was stolen from an exhibition in Kyiv, leading him to the epiphany that his works represented a significant value to the public. Later in US Sher began experimenting with marine wildlife photography and sharply moved toward figurative fine art. His latest artistic innovations blend figurative and abstract photography into forms that could be almost mistaken for abstract paintings. Sher’s underwater photography began to attract extensive interest in 2015. To date, his works has been exhibited in London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other major cities including the Louvre Museum in Paris. His first solo show was held in 2016 in Los Angeles’s by Bruce Lurie Gallery. Since his debut, Sher had six exclusive exhibitions, participated in numerous group exhibitions and prominent art fairs. Sher's photographs are published by 25 magazines in 11 countries. His first photo book “Mermaids” was published in 2018. Sher mastered the profession of underwater coaching. Bringing forth his technical and artistic innovations, he generously shares his techniques with his models and aspiring photographers.

'Cicatrices (3)' Limited edition archival photograph. Unframed, hand signed and numbered _________________ Scars of birthing in the unfolding leaf pattern of the giant graceful Agave. The sensual contradictions of silken flesh and the protective spines are a contemplation of motherhood's journey, the unfolding narrative impressed eternally upon the skin. Sophia's poetic photographs are an exploration of the balance in all things: in the sensual interplay of light and shadow; in wild raw energy and serene stillness; in joy and pain; in the enduring and the effervescent. They are a contemplation of the awareness that everything in existence is temporary, they speak of the ephemeral nature of all things. Moments, feelings, experiences cherished and appreciated in their impermanence, for that is where the beauty comes from. 'I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within... tangible traces, evidence left behind, records; process in action, stilled'. 40 x 60 inches Limited edition of 25 Archival Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® paper, one of the most beautiful and high quality art papers available. The luxurious matt finish provides a reflection free image that is rich in detail, depth and tone. Hand signed, titled and numbered to the lower right corner on an approximately 1 inch white border.
