Mitchell Funk
Art Deco Movie Theater Marquee - Color Field Painting Meet Photography, Abstract

1980

About the Item

A marquee for an Art Deco Movie theater in Denton, Texas is photographed with meticulous precision by street photographer Mitchell Funk. Funk's approach to street photography breaks with the tradition of the quick draw/ snapshot approach that is associated with the genre. Instead, he draws inspiration from studio photography. Each element of the shot is carefully composed and designed as if it were a still life in the studio. In this instance, the Deco Movie facade is as much as an abstraction as it is a representation. This photograph is an exploration into the exact design, color, and shape. In 1980, this was a revolutionary approach in color photography. Signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, other sizes available, printed later, unframed. This work is printed on fine art Hahnemuhle paper. The color will vary from monitor to monitor. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum. Brooklyn Museum, show "Images en Couleur" . 1971 Included he was included in the visionary book "Frontiers of Photography" Time-Life. Color ! American Photography Transformed. Amon Carter Museum. Shai Kremer lives and works in New York. He completed his MFA studies at the School of Visual Arts (S.V.A) in Manhattan. For many years, Kremer's eye has been drawn to themes of urban destruction and reconstruction and to landscapes evidencing trauma. These concerns merged in his ambitious series W.T.C: Concrete Abstract, which explores the impact of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. For more than a decade, Kremer made periodic visits to Ground Zero, focusing his camera on the efforts towards recovery, repair, and renewal. As a collection, Concrete Abstract conveys the gradual progression from tragedy towards healing. Each large-scale archival pigment print in the series is composed from as many as sixty to 100 overlapping images, resulting in a subtle collage that invites closer inspection while also reading as a unified whole. 'Cicatrices (3)' Limited edition archival photograph. Unframed, hand signed and numbered _________________ Scars of birthing in the unfolding leaf pattern of the giant graceful Agave. The sensual contradictions of silken flesh and the protective spines are a contemplation of motherhood's journey, the unfolding narrative impressed eternally upon the skin. Sophia's poetic photographs are an exploration of the balance in all things: in the sensual interplay of light and shadow; in wild raw energy and serene stillness; in joy and pain; in the enduring and the effervescent. They are a contemplation of the awareness that everything in existence is temporary, they speak of the ephemeral nature of all things. Moments, feelings, experiences cherished and appreciated in their impermanence, for that is where the beauty comes from. 'I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within... tangible traces, evidence left behind, records; process in action, stilled'. 40 x 60 inches Limited edition of 25 Archival Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® paper, one of the most beautiful and high quality art papers available. The luxurious matt finish provides a reflection free image that is rich in detail, depth and tone. Hand signed, titled and numbered to the lower right corner on an approximately 1 inch white border.
