About the artist:
Albert Monier (1915-1998) worked outside the established world of commercial printing, creating his postcards on photographic paper in his lab. Using a small number of images, he managed to gain a popular foothold in the world of postcard photography, then dominated by Editions Yvon.
Some of the most popular postcards of Paris during the 1950s and 1960s featured the black and white photography of Albert Monier. He had a special empathy for the men of the working class and those even poorer, and when people appear in his photography, they are more likely to be homeless or extremely poor than to be nattily dressed.
About:
Montmartre is a district of the 18th arrondissement of Paris (France) dominated by the Sacré-Coeur basilica. Since the 19th Century, it has hosted many artists such as Picasso and Modigliani and has become the bohemian way of life's symbol.
Until 1860, Montmartre was a commune in the Seine department. That year, under the capital extension law, the town was annexed by Paris. The territory of the former Montmartre was integrated into what became the 18th arrondissement of Paris, baptized "des Buttes-Montmartre" and made up of the administrative districts of Grandes-Carrières, Clignancourt, Goutte-d'Or, and Chapel. Like the Marais district, Montmartre today has no precise geographical limit: it is a historic Parisian district but not an administrative one.
Known for its narrow and steep streets flanked by long staircases, this very touristy sector of northern Paris is home to the highest point of the capital on Montmartre hill.
