About the Item

‘Twiggy’ Chelsea, London, 1966 by Arthur Steel Paper size: 40 x 28.5 inches / 102 x 71 cm Framing options available. Fashion shoot at her then boyfriend Justin de Villeneuve’s home. Arthur recalls: “In 1966, I was asked to photograph a very young fashion model called ‘Twiggy’ who had literally just started out in her modelling career. We arranged to meet at her then boyfriend’s house in Chelsea, London. On arrival, she was sporting a three-quarter length fur, topped with a felt cloche hat with a little bow knot to the front. Well – there was a picture right in front of me. As it happened, I was a little early for our appointment that day and had had time to scout the area beforehand for an appropriate backdrop; I had stumbled across an enormous ornate oak door – needless to say; I had my picture.” Camera: Leica 35mm. Art historian H. H. Arnason, who ranked Lipchitz with Picasso and Marc Chagall, wrote, "Lipchitz, as a pure sculptor, is ...unquestionably one of the greatest sculptors of this century." The architect Philip Johnson asked Lipchitz to make a wall sculpture to be placed on the brick chimney over a fireplace of a guest house owned by Mrs. John D. Rockefeller III on West 53rd Street in New York. Lipchitz decided to develop the piece from his Pegasus designs and call it Birth of the Muses in honor of the Rockefellers' interest in the arts. In 1950 he completed the work as a bronze relief five feet high. It was installed as planned and later was acquired by Lincoln Center. He participated in the Flight portfolio...
