About the Item

A vintage print by Helmut Newton, dating back to the year 2000, bearing original stamps on the verso and accompanied by a certification of authenticity issued by Davide Manfredi, former Italian representative of the artist. The work is currently exhibited in Monte Carlo at villa Sauber within the show "Newton Riviera" ongoing from 17.06.2022 - 13.11.2022, and published in the catalogue of the show. The artwork's provenance is a prominent Italian private collection. In case it can be sold with a certification of the provenance of a gallery selling the piece. The conditions of the piece are mostly perfect: no scratches and perfectly well-preserved margins. The piece could also travel unframed so as to have cheaper and safer shipping at the buyer’s request. As the piece travels from Italy, please consider that the fulfillment of exportation papers requires a minimum of one week from the moment of purchase. Helmut Newton (German, 1920–2004) is held as one of the great masters of late Twentieth-Century photography, whose photographic style is still seen as provocative and widely capable to challenge the comprehension of female desire and sexuality. Born in Berlin from a Jewish family, after being an apprentice of Yva, he left the country in 1938. After being in Singapore and in Australia, where he met his wife and lifetime companion June, he returned to Europe only in the Sixties, where he started a successful fashion photographer career in Paris in 1961. As a fashion photographer, he contributed to leading magazines such as French Vogue, Harper Bazaar, Playboy, Elle Queen, GQ, Marie-Claire. During his career he has worked for Chanel, Gianni Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and has photographed many personalities from the entertainment, culture, politics and cinema sectors such as Ava Gardner, Charlotte Rampling, Catherine Deneuve, Romy Schneider , Raquel Welch, Sigourney Weaver, Margaret Thatcher, Helmut Kohl, Jean-Marie Le Pen, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Wim Wenders. Dubbed the ‘King of Kink’ by Time Magazine, he published several books of his work such as White Women (1976), Big Nudes (1981), and World Without Men (1984): thanks to the contribution of his wife June, he pushed through the boundaries of his vision, in which the female nude is a tool to highlight sex as a symbol of strength and power.

A limited edition Giclee print on Baryta paper 315 gr. from the "Paparazzi" series. “These images have a deceptive character which contradicts the sensationalism they would like to convey” (Mazaccio & Drowilal). The starting point of the series “Paparazzi” was a collection of celebrities’ pictures from their everyday activities such as shopping and jogging, and golfing, but all shot by the paparazzi. After collecting them from magazines and the internet, the duo gathered the images in the same picture allowing them “for the sensational side to be neutralized, so there was a shift from the «scoop» of catching a celebrity, to an anonymous crowd.”(Mazaccio & Drowilal). Working principally with photography and collage, Mazaccio & Drowilal deconstruct multiple facets of contemporary visual culture through their process of gathering and arranging mass-media images. Their visual practice and aesthetic approach are heavily influenced by the Internet’s new iconographies and digital culture. Mazaccio & Drowilal have explored a wide breadth of subjects pertaining to celebrity, branding, artificiality, and identity.
