Horst P. Horst
Mainbocher Corset

1939

About the Item

Signed, dated, and titled in pencil with artist's copyright stamp on verso, blind-stamped on recto. Includes black frame. Taken on August 11, 1939, this is Horst's most recognizable image and was featured in issues of both American & French Vogue that year. The model, Madame Bernon, is shown wearing a sensually laced corset by Detolle for Mainbocher. Horst was inspired by the Greco-Roman proportions and classical stylings of his colleague and mentor, George Hoyningen-Huene.
