About the Item

Feldforschung 07 - Contemporary Abstract Diamond Texture Photograph Edition 3/3 + 1 AP Photo print will be shipped with an adhesive label signed by the artist After concentrating on modules of metropolises, Hubert Blanz comes for materials from wood and grasslands in order to produce collages. Mosses, leaves, lichen - the inner structure of tiny objects are visualised through transmitted light technique and put together to new lanscapes by time-consuming detail work. Flickering from the distance, approaching: intarsia of nature. Hubert Blanz's artistic works mainly deal with urban infrastructure, spatial patterns and geographic as well as virtual networks. A central focus has become the metropolis, its rapid and constant expansion, the challenges which arise from this, its vision and its impact on our living together. Reading and deciphering Blanz‘s large-scale images depends on the beholder’s distance from the work. From a distance the picture often appears to be an abstract pattern, but when it is approached, the components become recognizable – a game with proportions and the perception of invented spaces. "Hubert Blanz is the science fiction author of Austrian photography. The first Digital Surroundings were exhibited back in 2001 in a photo space then known as the “Volpinum.” At that time, circuit boards simulated the satellite view of possible cities, electronic components replaced the real buildings and helicopters rattled through the air. Since then, Hubert Blanz has been building on a hyperreal universe: Commuter towns made of polystyrene, whose barren environs reinforce the impression that all life has long been extinguished from them, or airport runways stratified on an unmanageable number of levels, or highways crisscrossing on just as many levels, implying a vertical urban complex like that of Zion, the city of resistance fighters in “The Matrix.” The practice of accumulating photos, whether they come from the Internet or a digital camera, seems to be the logical consequence of a picture archive that is available at all times." (Excerpt from Ruth Horak’s text “Urban Codes”) Hubert Blanz was born in 1969 in Hindelang, Germany. He studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Artist in Residencies in Paris, London, Chicago and New York. Numerous solo and group shows amongst others in Austria, Germany, USA, UK, Spain, Chile, Italy and France. Lives and works in Vienna.
