Jake Chessum
Kate Moss at 16 by Jake Chessum

About the Item

Signed limited edition print of Kate Moss by Jake Chessum, taken when she was an unknown 16 year old model, just starting her career. Jake recalls, "I had heard of Kate as she was a new model at Storm and was only just 16 years old. She also lived in my home town of Croydon. Once in a while I would see her on the train up from East Croydon, clutching her portfolio. On one occasion I bumped into her on the platform at Victoria Tube Station where she complained to me that she’d had enough of modelling and was thinking of giving up. On another evening as I exited Purley station in South London on my way home from college she was there hanging out. She told me she was waiting for her boyfriend. I am not sure if I am making this up, but I have a feeling he roared around the corner in an old Ford Escort to pick her up. I wish I had a photo of that moment. A few months later I graduated from St. Martins and scored my first ever advertising job for Neutrogena. I had by this time already shot a test with Kate in Ladbroke Grove, but this was a job! The casting brief from the agency was simple: We want somebody relatable and young, with great skin, but definitely not a supermodel. At the casting Kate came in and was all smiles. She recognized me and we greeted each other with a hug and chatted for a few minutes. She had an infectious laugh and a great personality…she was really funny. After she left the creative team were blown away and kept asking me: “How do you know her?” “Who is that girl?”. She really had a special quality even at that early stage. The irony…within about 18 months she was one of the biggest models on the planet. I am not sure how much time she spends in Croydon these days." Available in the following sizes. 12 x 16” - Edition 20 16 x 20” - Edition 20 20 x24” - Edition 15 30 x 40” - Edition 7 Jake grew up in Croydon, South London. He studied Graphic Design at St. Martins School Of Art, and started working as photographer straight out of college. Assignments for The Face, Arena, and an early ad campaign for Neutrogena featuring a 16 year old Kate Moss followed. By 1995 Jake was regularly flying the Atlantic on assignment for JFK Jrs’ George Magazine. In 1999 he upped sticks and moved permanently to New York, where he still lives with his wife and family. Alongside shooting commissioned portraits and advertising assignments, Jake has always been a dedicated street photographer.
