About the Item
Last Man Standing
Creating his own dancefloor. As much a part of the show as he is the audience.
The Carnaval of Olinda, on the north east coast of Brazil, is a week of high energy and exuberance. Dancers and musicians perform in Blocos that progress slowly through the streets of the beautiful colonial era town, thronged with thousands of revellers.

James Sparshatt‘s black and white portraits are a search for a connection with a world of emotions. His photographs from the streets of Havana, the milongas of Buenos Aires, the jazz clubs of New Orleans and bars of Andalucia capture the spirit of music in populations wher it is the very lifeblood and expression of life.

James Sparshatt
James Sparshatt began his photographic career in the 1990s in Bolivia, working as a photojournalist and editor of the Bolivian Times. James has had solo exhibitions in the US, Ireland, Spain, Cuba, France and across the UK. His work has also been shown at prestigious contemporary art fairs including Pulse - Miami, Art Chicago, Art Hamptons, Slick Paris, Art Market (San Francisco) among others. James’s photographs have been used for many advertising campaigns and have featured in magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Tatler, Red, Wanderlust as well as all of the UK’s major broadsheets. He has also written for the New Statesman. “My love of photography developed while I was working as a photojournalist in Latin America in the 1990s. Both there, and later in Cuba, I was captivated by the energy and exuberance of the festivals and dance so inherent in Latino life. Many of my images celebrate the rich and vibrant musical heritage of Havana, Buenos Aires and Seville. When I look at them I recall the rhythmic beat of the music and almost feel a trickle of sweat running down my back.” His exhibition at the Royal National Theatre, London was described in the Sunday Telegraph as “a dazzling collection of black and white images”. James has been a finalist in the Sony World Photographic awards, the Centre for Fine Art Photography and The Worldwide Photography Gala awards. He has also won the Center for Fine Art Photography’s International award. James frequently gives talks about his work at photographic festivals and exhibitions.

- Woman Protestor, March on Washington, African-American Civil Rights PhotographyBy Leonard FreedLocated in New york, NYWoman Protestor, March on Washington, 1963 by Leonard Freed, is a 14" x 11" gelatin silver photograph, signed and stamped on verso (back of photo) by the estate, Brigitte Freed (wife of the photographer). The photo is in Leonard Freed's book “This Is the Day: The March on Washington'' (p. 50). Leonard Freed enjoyed documentary storytelling and as a "concerned photographer" his work demonstrated humanitarian concerns. The photographer travelled to New York, Washington, D.C., and throughout the South, capturing the daily life of African-Americans. Documenting the 1960s Civil Rights Movement from the East Coast to the Deep South, Freed’s photo essay culminated in the book Black in White America, which contributed to Freed's becoming one of the well-known documentary photographers of 20th Century America. After Freed’s death in 2006 his widow, Brigitte Freed was inspired to compile a book on the March on Washington from her late husband’s archive when she heard then-Senator former President Barack Obama remark to an audience of civil rights activists, “I stand here because you walked.” The March on Washington series is a powerful visual testimony, capturing protests that culminated in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream'' speech, delivered at the base of the Lincoln Memorial. Provenance: Freed archive. *** Artist’s Bio: Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was an American photographer from Brooklyn, New York.
