About the Item

Staring into space, Mondrian by Leo Matiz Image size: 14 in. H x 17 in. W Frame size: 21 in. H x 29 in. W Gelatin silver print 1963 - Prited later Framed Signed "Leo Matiz" lower left and embossed "Leo Matiz Foundation" on lower right, Verso reads: "Copyright: Alejandra Matiz" Leo Matiz summarized his artistic pursuits by saying: “I am a painter because of activism, photographer because of hunger, and crazy because of talent.” Indeed, Matiz began his career as a caricaturist for political and literary publications, with a keen eye for gesture, features, and scathing humor. These illustrations were particularly influenced by the work of Gustave Doré, George Grosz, Nadar, and Guadalupe Posada. He later began working as a photojournalist in Mexico for a number of international publications, but began to use the medium to explore more artistic themes. His keenness for caricature served him well in his photographic portraiture, for which he is best recognized today. Matiz’s subjects included Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Neruda.

Archival Pigment Print Edition of 5 Miami Skin is one of the few “Still photo” project realized only in Black and White. It’s not a traditional collection of photos about the architecture of Miami and Miami Beach. It’s rather a quick journey between its own skin from the Art Deco District to the modern skyline of our days. Stripes, circles, squares, reflections show only some details of important buildings but they all have the power to arise emotions and unexpected shapes and volumes inside us. A final touch is reserved for nature skin from the ocean to the tropical vegetation. You need now to make an effort of imagination to discover and compose all pictures and eventually frame it in your own mind. _________________ Luca Artioli, an artist, poet and photographer recognized in Europe and around the world, has worked for years in the most vital artistic circles of world culture, such as La Scala Opera House in Milan, The Wolfsonian Museum in Miami during Art Basel, Hermès in Paris...
