"The Wave" A Moody, Infrared Silver Gelatin Photograph of a Crashing Wave

2019

About the Item

"The Wave" is an Infrared silver gelatin photograph by Monterey, CA based artist Rachell Hester. This photograph measures 13.5"w x 10"h and masterfully captures the moment a wave comes into contact with a rock against a dramatic sky. Rachell uses a special filter on her camera in addition to infrared film. The filter allows her to capture wavelengths of infrared light invisible to the naked eye; resulting dreamlike textures of the spray caused by the impact of the wave. the misty surface of the water in the foreground, and a dark sky in the background. "The Wave" is offered in a custom contemporary black frame (wood) with an archival white mat and low-glare museum glass. The outside measurements are 21"w x 17"h. About the Artist: Rachell Hester is a painter and photographer based in Monterey, CA. The natural world is a pivotal force in her artwork. Rachell explores the wooded trails in Monterey County and the Big Sur coastline with her camera, often capturing vistas that are off-limits to most people. Using film photography and alternative processes such as solarization and infrared film, Rachell spends many hours in the darkroom controlling the development of a photograph. Through this intentional distortion, she creates haunting compositions depicting scenes and marine life abstractions that don’t naturally exist. Rachell has a BA in Visual Art from CSU Monterey Bay and an MFA in Pictorial Art from San Jose State University. Her artwork has been exhibited in the CSUMB Chancellor’s Office and in a solo show at the Pacific Grove Art Center. She received two Weston Collective awards in the Roman Loranc Fine Art Photography category several years in a row. During her Master’s studies, she was awarded the 2022 Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Scholarship at SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco. She was an Artist-in-Residence at the American Tin Cannery in Pacific Grove and was a recipient of the Local Emerging Artist Program (LEAP) Grant from the Arts Council for Monterey County.

A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...

ABOUT In this exhibition, Mindaugas Gabrenas invites us to reflect on the poetics of place through his lyrical and surrealist imagery. His hand-printed silver gelatin prints reveal abandoned regions, wild coasts and strange territories from Lithuania to Scotland to America. As a scientific innovator, he uses unique techniques and unconventional materials in order to create his whimsical, dream photos. In “Spinning The Wheel”, stars trace the sky in a curved motion and meet the water below creating a sense of the infinite. As Gabrenas explores and captures landscapes through very long exposures, he actually meditates and reflects on the world around him encouraging his viewers to imagine themselves within the landscapes and dream with him. In another image “Dream About an Empty House”, that was taken in Lithuania, we see a young girl from behind in a red polka dotted dress as she faces an abandoned home. Using his handmade camera he constructed by merging two cameras—a Kiev 88 and a Kodak Duaflex II. The viewfinder of the Duaflex serves as an additional filter on the lens of the Kiev 88, which is fixed to its body with several macro rings. Before shooting the film, he wraps it in black rye bread and waits several days for the mold to grow onto the film. The combination of these two techniques creates a sense of motion around the central figure. “Alternatives”, our invitational image, pulls us into Gabrenas’ world. The focused close-up and abstracted view of train tracks distorts a familiar shape into a strange and unusual form. The tracks lead you in the distance, a blurry city of New York. The ironic lack of human life in New York City conveys a mystifying sense of place. In “Something With a Head”, we’re taken to the Lithuanian seaside where silhouetted figures stand on sand dunes watching...
