About the Item
Richard Kagan, born in Philadelphia, followed a circuitous path to become a photographer. Beginning with street photography using a meterless Asahi Pentax as a student at Temple University, to leaving college to practice Zen Buddhism in New York City. Becoming so inspired by the silent eloquence of handmade objects, he pawned the camera to buy woodworking tools and after several years of apprenticeships, he opened his own workshop, creating one-of-a-kind and limited production furniture. A chronic back condition put a premature end to his woodworking career and led the return to photography, thus bringing him back to where he began.
Tools have been essential to our growth and evolution as a species. No one would question their vital need for any task at hand, but Kagan’s portfolio "Iron Portraits" forces us to us pay attention to these strange and beautiful objects that often no longer have a use in our daily lives.
“I am less interested in the tools as tools… I respond to their incredible sculptural qualities — their surface, tone, balance, line, and geometry” says Kagan. This series of 24 works, created from a traditional 4×5 film camera and complex lighting, create a compelling body of work that illustrates a great sense of wonder, humor and whimsy. It allows the viewer to look a bit deeper than the surface to discover “the secret lives of tools.”
Gallery 270 represents distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype, and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is much more intimately engaged.

- MLK Baltimore USABy Leonard FreedLocated in Westwood, NJLeonard Freed is considered one of the most prolific and timely photojournalists of his generation. Born in Brooklyn, he traveled to Europe for the first time in 1952, where he discovered photography. In 1954 he moved to Little Italy on the lower east side of Manhattan, where his love affair with Italian culture began. The photographs expose Freed’s love of the Italian people. In photo after photo, the daily life, rituals and traditions of Italians are expertly frozen in time by the eye of such an accomplished photographer. The Italians finds scenes of weddings, birthdays and everyday life exposing their inner lives. His photographs illuminate an entire set of habits intertwined with tradition that are symbols of a broader culture and an entire country. Freed’s career began shortly after World War II with subjects as diverse as his travels. Freed first came to fame in the United States documenting...Category

- At the Petrol Station - Vintage Silver Salt Photograph by A. RodcenkoLocated in Roma, ITAt the petrol station is an original vintage silver salts photograph, made by the great Russian Constructivist artist Aleksandr Michajlovic Rodčenko (Saint Petersburg, 1891 - Moscow, 1956) in 1935 ca. Printed later, presumably between the 1940s and the 1950s. In very good conditions, it is rare and precious. A scene of ordinary life is portrayed in an unusual point of view. The oblique cuts, the use of diagonal as the dynamics of this image, the close position of the machine are constants of Rodčenko'style and something of absolutely revolutionary and innovative at that time in the field of photography! Provenance: Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, Great Britain; Forum Auction, London; Private Collection. Bibliography: Alexander Rodchenko. Catalog of the retrospective exhibition published from the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1979.
