About the Item

Born in Cologne in 1922, died in Hamburg in 2004. Apprenticeship as a machinist from 1937, then studied engineering (not completed due to the war). Served in the war and imprisoned. From 1947 self-taught photographer, 1948 to 1951 photo reporter at the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung in Heidelberg and assistant to Fred Ihrt. 1951 to 1956 photojournalist at the Associated Press in Bonn. 1956 to 1964 photo reporter at STERN; among other things, photo reports from the Hungarian uprising in 1956, from China and from the GDR. From 1964 responsible for the cover design of STERN. 1965 to 1981 as deputy editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief responsible for the image design and journalistic concept of STERN. Also founder and editor-in-chief of GEO from 1976 to 1978. 1981 to 1984 editor-in-chief of STERN. Awards: 95 medals from the Art Directors Club (ADC) Appointed honorary member of the ADC (1985) 35 gold medals for STERN title design
