Holly Gordon
Stony Brook Grist Mill, Stony Brook, LI : contemporary photography

2016

About the Item

A wonderful contemporary artwork by a noted Long Island photographer Holly Gordon. For more than two decades Gordon has pushed through the traditional boundaries of photography. She is one of the pioneers of “photo-liminalism,” a process of achieving painterly quality in photography by overlapping, layering, and manipulating. As painters paint with a brush, Gordon’s brush is the lens of the camera and her computer. The digital world that Gordon works with provides endless opportunities. The evolution of images in her practice is limitless and bountiful.  Another highlight of Gordon’s recent career is her collaboration with Ward Hooper, a noted illustrator and painter from Long Island. The result of this collaboration is a book called “Parallel Perspectives : The Brush/ Lens Collaboration,” with a forward by Peter Pitzele, Ph.D., a teacher and author, and a preface by Denise A. Bibro, Director of Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC. This collaboration continues a long tradition of Long Island coupled artists creating and experiencing art using Long Island as an incubator for creativity. One particular Long Island partnership that inspired Holly and Ward was of renowned twentieth century artist, Arthur Dove, and his wife, painter Hellen Torr. Other couples of artists connected to Long Island such as Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock and Elaine and Willem de Kooning were also inspirational for the two. These pairings were a testament of the richness of place and history of Long Island that should always be remembered and celebrated. Holly Gordon’s work has been exhibited widely in such institutions as Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC, American Museum of Natural History, NYC, New York Hall of Science, NYC, The Heckscher Museum of Art, NY, Southampton Arts Center, NY, The Long Island Museum, NY, Islip Art Museum, NY, to name a few. Her photographs are a part of various collections including Molloy University, Rockville Centre, NY, NYU Langone Health, NYC, and Stony Brook Hospital, Long Island, NY.  She holds awards from National Wildlife Federation, Long Island Museum. Her art has appeared in The New York Times, Shutterbug Magazine, National Wildlife Magazine, The Long Islander, TBR Newsmedia, Long Island Woman, and Newsday among others.

Altstadt Rêveries #06, 2008 [From the series Goldenbogen & Zouzou] Digital color print based on original Polaroid on beautiful PHOTO RAG ULTRA SMOOTH 305gsm - 100% cotton by HAHNEMÜHLE, Hand signed & numbered by the artist, edition of 7 - nr 02 Unmounted. Carmen De Vos - Artist statement Flying Freelance Portrayer. Purveyor of Exquisite Photographic Peculiarities. Chroniqueur and Archiver. Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the late TicKL-Magazine. The Belgian artist Carmen De Vos is a slow photographer. She registers, portrays and thinks up odd stories. She shoots Polaroids to frame these mental escapades, they get so easily out of hand. She enormously longs for what she’s afraid to loose: real human contact, the slowness of being and creating, the tangibility of materials. Almost without exception she uses old Polaroid camera’s, long time expired film and self-made filters. Her tools and methods - such as film bleaching and deliberate film obstruction - are not precise and are not even geared towards a perfect representation. They often yield results - such as colorisation, deformation, unsharpness - which she could never have predicted on forehand with any certainty, because their flaws do not allow for calculation. She’s not in control. She fights the material. She plans, stages and directs but the decayed chemistry and off-focus lenses add their magic. All by themselves. Which merrily surprises her. Or ruins her image. This battle attracts her as much as it frustrates her. She loves to create within these limitations, to try to produce the best possible image within the narrow circumstances given. Luckily, she’s a sucker for imperfections. Once upon a time she found herself guilty of home-crafted mischiefs for TicKL, her English art porn Polaroid magazine. She never really got cured from naughtiness. She can’t help but traveling back to these blessed times of free-love photography...
