About the Item

Hubert Blanz Homeseekers - A City from Behind (Detail 10), 2016 C-print, 45 x 78 cm ed. 3+1 AP Print comes with a signed self-adhesive label Hubert Blanz's artistic works mainly deal with urban infrastructure, spatial patterns and geographic as well as virtual networks. A central focus has become the metropolis, its rapid and constant expansion, the challenges which arise from this, its vision and its impact on our living together. Like in many of the other artist’s series his project "Homeseekers – A City from Behind“ deals with spatial structures, architectonic situations and urban motives whereby the origin of this project has to be found in capturing London’s facades and mural exterior walls. Blanz took over 2600 images in each borough of Greater London, edited and, in some extent, composed them in collages and scenes. The artist emphasizes his fascination for the architectonical peculiarity of the simple brick houses that increasingly replaced the wooden buildings after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Additionally, an essential influence on their appearance has been the window tax from 1696 and the "tax for light and air" from 1746, both oft them only abolished in the mid of 19th century and therefore a significant sign for social differences during their long efficacy. Reading and deciphering Blanz‘s large-scale images depends on the beholder’s distance from the work. From a distance the picture often appears to be an abstract pattern, but when it is approached, the components become recognizable – a game with proportions and the perception of invented spaces. "Hubert Blanz is the science fiction author of Austrian photography. The first Digital Surroundings were exhibited back in 2001 in a photo space then known as the “Volpinum.” At that time, circuit boards simulated the satellite view of possible cities, electronic components replaced the real buildings and helicopters rattled through the air. Since then, Hubert Blanz has been building on a hyperreal universe: Commuter towns made of polystyrene, whose barren environs reinforce the impression that all life has long been extinguished from them, or airport runways stratified on an unmanageable number of levels, or highways crisscrossing on just as many levels, implying a vertical urban complex like that of Zion, the city of resistance fighters in “The Matrix.” The practice of accumulating photos, whether they come from the Internet or a digital camera, seems to be the logical consequence of a picture archive that is available at all times. [...] Hubert Blanz was born in 1969 in Hindelang, Germany. He studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Artist in Residencies in Paris, London, Chicago and New York. Numerous solo and group shows amongst others in Austria, Germany, USA, UK, Spain, Chile, Italy and France. Lives and works in Vienna.

  • Memories Are Made Of This - Contemporary, Polaroid, Landscape, Color
    By Julia Beyer
    Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Memories Are Made Of This (America) 2016, 40 x 40 cm, edition of 10, digital C-Print based on a Polaroid, hand-numbered and signed on the back by the artist. Artist Statement “Since my childhood days I always loved taking photos, but for unknown reasons instant film never really caught my attention. After I saw the works of a friend who happened to be a gifted Polaroid photographer, I was totally mesmerized and the desire to shoot with instant film constantly grew in me. But for as long as I can think music has always been my main preoccupation. I somehow always feel the need to create, but my focus shifted more and more from making music to instant photography and it grew into something much more fulfilling and pure. Sometimes, these two passions even come together when I am able to provide my photos for album artworks – this makes me incredibly happy. As I always have been very introverted and reclusive I often drift off into my own inner world. The dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres in my work are the visualization and the result of these imaginations. Another influence on my photography is my essential need to travel the world. But I am not interested in documenting the places I see like they are but rather love to create otherworldly scenes by adding the dreamlike texture of instant film, serving me as a needful escape from reality.” Artist Biography Julia Beyer is an analogue photographer from Germany. She mainly works with instant film to express her inner visions that often show dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres. After being more known for her musical endeavors as the singer of the dreampop band Chandeen, she began to delve into this photographic art form in 2014 and since then expands her portfolio continuously. Her work has been published in various international print and online publications. Since 2017, she is a member of the renowned "12:12 Project", a worldwide collective of female Polaroid photographers.
