Second Hand Flowers Nr. 24 - nature color and form photography homage to Warhol

2023

About the Item

Second Hand Flowers Nr. 24 is a unique photo work of German artist Karin Elmers. C-print on photographic paper mounted on alu-dibond under 3mm acrylic. Easy hanging mechanism on back. Incl. Certificate. The Second Hand Flowers play with the place, the second hand store Secondella, and of course wiht the famous model, Andy Warhol's Flowers, and lead into the middle of the history of original and reproduction, of archetype and likeness , and of the supposedly "applied" photography and the art classified in contrast as "free". Karin Elmers' artistic subject is, in the broadest sense, nature with its colors and forms, structures and interweavings. She takes her own photographs as a starting point, which she works on in complex, recurring processses on the computer, until she can no longer return to her starting point. Karin Elmers literally paints on the computer. The results are not superficial Photoshop snapshots, but multi-layered works that speak of decades of experience with the processing possiblities in the darkroom. She stretches the boundaries of photography in several directions: she alienates forms and colors , experiments with cropping and cutting, with with colors and exposures, and dissolves natural forms into weaves and structures. The resemblance of Karin Elmers 99 Flowers to Andy Wahol's Flowers is unmistakable, which is not only one of th artist's most famous motifs, but the Pop Art icon par excellence. While Warhol mirrored the source photo, Elmers found the flowers of the Pink Trumpet Tree like this in a weadow right ouside her front door in Florida. The similaritiy is striking: as in Warhol's work, the arrangement of the four blossoms, each of which does not quite fit into one of the four quadrants but breaks out of these boundaries, transgresses them, and the twists of the blossoms, which drive them slightly apart in differetn directions - these two factors accentuate the actually boring, becaus in itself completely balanced format of the square. They lend the composition a subtle rhythm that enters into a peculiar relationship of tension with the actually tensionless format of the square.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
