Artist and photographer Paul-Émile Rioux lives in Montréal, Canada. His lifelong interest in cutting-edge media technology as well as his expertise in photography cast him as pioneer in digital art and allow him to develop virtual matrix from which he extracts his images. In his works he explores a universe that lies at the crossroad of abstraction and the figurative, inviting the viewer to determine if what he sees is a reflection of reality or imagination. Through is truly unique approach RIOUX is one of the most innovative artists in digital creations and one of the few creative minds able to blend with such keenness aesthetics research and critical distance. Whether they translate into a Dantesque urbanity or the infinite horizon of a turquoise ocean, the urban territory reflected by his creations offers a dystopian view of the world, challenging our attitude towards the environment and the future.
From the onset, RIOUX has no intention of matching IRL expectations of what digital art “should” look like, but strives to play with our notions of what's real, what's not, how we remember, and how we infer meaning into imaginary visual constructs.
Title: Turquoise 15
Turquoise Default is a collection that Paul-Emile Rioux started around 2014-15.
RIOUX's practice takes place both in the direction of experimentation as well as in the progressive unveiling of stages. Turquoise includes both video creations and still images. Regardless of the format, each work consists of three layers or superpositions. Each layer is distinct and yet interdependent. The upper layers, representing something like the sky, move slowly. The intermediate layers, perhaps representing the ocean, move very quickly. On the other hand, the lower layers, representing something like a submerged world, are gradually transformed while partially revealing themselves under a fluid surface.
The Turquoise collection explores the notion of water as a source of forgetting and erasure. Water dissolves traces, erodes and serves as a burial area. Everything that is thrown beneath its surface, outside of our memory, of our fears, is thus immediately dissolved by its immaculate surface. It gives us a feeling of stability and durability precisely because of its fluid properties; his apparent ability to fill every loophole. Although we know that the effects of this camouflage will manifest themselves over time, we are deliberately obliterating the shipwreck in which we are participating.
Turquoise 15 is a complete set introducing all of them in a large mosaic.
Each archival pigment print is produced under the supervision of the artist.
The prints are mounted under a single piece of 1" thick diamond acrylic block.
Every acrylic block is 100% handcrafted in USA.
All sides of the acrylic are crystal clear diamond polished.
The back is bounded on a white neutral material with an aluminium/cleat hang system.
The acrylic block floats 1/2" from the wall with a highly secure aluminium cleat hang system.
