Tom Kelley (1914-1984) was a mid-century modern photographer synonymous with Hollywood’s Golden Age and helped define post-war pop culture in cinema, fashion, and advertising. Born in Philadelphia in 1914, he trained in New York, mingling with high society and the avant-garde art elite. By 21, he had a Los Angeles studio and began capturing emerging stars like Ingrid Bergman, soon collaborating with major Hollywood studios. The iconic "Red Velvet" images of Marilyn Monroe he shot in 1949 graced Playboy's inaugural 1953 issue, sealing his status and proved to be a catalyst in the sexual revolution.
Kelley's unique and evolving styles influenced society for more than four decades and can still be seen reflecting in many of today’s contemporary artists such as Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Alex Prager, and Gregory Crewdson. With a career spanning more than four decades, Tom Kelley received numerous awards and his most significant works were acquired by the Smithsonian and the Getty Archive, preserving his contributions to art and culture. Today, the Tom Kelley estate, in collaboration with IFAC Arts, helps ensure his legacy continues to inspire in the 21st century.
