Pandemic #53

About the Item

"Covid Vanitas: The Pandemic Still Lifes" On the first day of quarantine I began photographing the people-less quiet of a home and studio in isolation. The still lifes are a visual journal of days passing with little change but the weather and season and what was provided by a small plot of land in rural New Mexico. The quotidian and mundane were magnified as I turned my eye to what had previously been overlooked and barely acknowledged. There were natural events that occurred over time that were particular to place which I included in the slowly turning narrative of the images (a plague of moths, drought, an unprecedented snow in early September, flocks of songbirds falling dead from the sky) but ultimately the body of work speaks to a more global shared experience of this unfathomable time. The images depict objects symbolizing the specificity of this era of social and physical isolation.

  • Dahlia (Formby Perfection) #2 - closeup of a flower, fine art photograpy, 2005
    By Howard Schatz
    Located in Vienna, AT
All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. This beautiful closeup of a Dahlia in purple and green is part of the 'Botanica'-Series. Howard Schatz spent several years photographing flowers, developing a specific love for Dahlias. The images he created are surreal in their richness of color and detail. 'Dahlia #2' is straightforward yet entrancing - It is a closeup of a Dahlia's flower bud, so detailed even the veins in the flower's petals are visible. The rhythmic arrangement of the pointed petals creates a kaleidoscopic image. The colouring in deep blue, light purple and neon green adds a surreal tpuch. Opulent flower crowns, intertwined bodies, and decadent dinners hosted in underwater worlds – Howard Schatz’s imagery is marked by grandeur and abundance. Transgressing genres and motives, Schatz approaches portraits, nature photography, and the moving body in all its forms with an outburst of passion and energy. Liquid colors, extravagant perspectives, and daring details surprise the onlooker at every corner. Succulent vegetation and airy fabrics bleed into magical compositions. Howard Schatz is an award-winning photographer living in New York City and widely exhibited worldwide. With twenty books of photographs to his credit, Schatz's wide-ranging artistic oeuvre includes studies of actors, dancers, athletes, portraiture, and a world of underwater imagery. His photographs have appeared in countless magazines around the globe, including a running series in Vanity Fair, along with the covers of TIME, Sports Illustrated, US News...
