Dominique Blain
Laela (7/10)

2006

About the Item

inkjet print on paper, framed edition 7 of 10 For over thirty years Dominique Blain has examined and addressed the links between relationships of domination, such as racism, mass indoctrination, genocide, war, exploitation, and imperialism. “People often ask why I, a white North American woman from Montréal, get involved when I have no experience of war, “ Blain says. “The question surprises me because I’m in a position to take a stand.” Her most recent body of work pursues the bleakest and harshest subject matter, including the vast and diverse body of masterpiece works that have been victims of theft, looting, or destruction. Dominique Blain’s visual vocabulary draws the viewer into her process of questioning, allowing the viewer to participate non-confrontationally in a dialogue on the nature of war, power, and freedom. Her work calls into question our privileged and unique role as witnesses. Blain’s work is included in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Nickels Art Museum in Canada, Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec in Canada, Musee des beaux-arts du Canada, Musee des beaux-arts de Montreal in Canada, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona, Air Canada, among many, many others.

  • Bi-Fold IX
    By Mark Pomilio
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
charcoal on paper mounted to silk foam core and wood Mark Pomilio’s work focuses on the research of fractals, cloning, and single cell manipulation. His mathematics-based drawings serve as a metaphor for naturally occurring systems of reproduction and growth. When Pomilio begins a piece, he doesn’t know where it will lead; although his tools and marks are precise, the layering, repetition, rotation, and distribution of basic shapes are improvised to emulate a single cell dividing and compounding into a complex form. The process of cell growth influences Pomilio’s practice and is emphasized through his own process, the use of erasure, faint outlines, opacity and translucency, and deliberate marks. The resulting compositions are balanced, unified, and harmonious. His work is included in the collections of the University of Arizona Museum of Art, Baylor University Martin Museum of Art, Dupont Corporation, University of Michigan...
