Lori Van Houten
Raptors and Songbirds, Swan: Figurative Still Life Photograph of Romantic Images

2019

About the Item

Horizontal figurative still life triptych photograph of classical imagery (woman's silk dress, white swan, and red berries) Raptors and Songbirds (Swan), made by Hudson Valley artist, Lori Van Houten, in 2019 pigment print on Moab Entrada rag paper, edition of 5 13 x 38 inches unframed, 17 x 42 inches in natural wood frame with non-reflective glass and wiring Lori Van Houten presents a series of multi-panel photographic works, entitled Raptors and Songbirds, which is inspired by the long tradition of storytelling as a means of understanding human experience. She explores the concept of fairy tales and how they use the divine or supernatural to teach valuable life lessons to young women in particular. Romantic images constructed into triptychs form visual narratives that shed light on the way these tales are told; graceful swans, dimly lit chandeliers, or the delicate folds of a silk dress seduce the audience while symbolic details of flora and fauna act as cautionary messengers. The compositions are made with photographs shot with modified Polaroid cameras, allowing the artist to record motion, alter color, and provide a slightly skewed vision. This fragmented juxtaposition of dream-like images implies a story that is told over time. Van Houten explains “my goal is not to tell a complete tale but to suggest phrases of sentences overheard in passing.” About the Artist: My current work consists of large photo-based works on paper. Each print incorporates nature-based photographs produced in camera, combined with selected found imagery to form each multi-layered piece. The work is produced by computer and consists of a complex layering and interacting of images and involves a continual back and forth process of erasing and adding to achieve the final whole. Each piece begins with an underlying image which is generally formed from several related images photographed at the same site. The underlying image is chosen for it’s basic forms and color and often suggests the final feeling of the piece although often all three elements are obscured by the time the work is complete. The underlying photomontage is covered with a textile image that serves as both a concealing and revealing element in the process. These layers are in turn combined with layers of additional photographs, fragments of photographs, herbarium samples and other imagery all interacting to form the final piece. The fabrics are selected for their depiction of botanical subjects and come from historical periods when this work flourished. Some of the series such as Stained Silks include fabrics of the 13th c. from the regions bordering the silk routes. Field Notes incorporates western lace imagery. The herbarium samples generally come from the same regions as the textiles and are often manipulated and used for the purposes of “drawing” on and in the composition. The selection of the various elements and images is both research and the structure on which each piece is built.

  • B-52 Cockpit
    By Phillip Buehler
    Located in New York, NY
40"40" photograph, edition of 5, signed and editioned on reverse framed in natural wood shadowbox frame This photograph is from a series entitled, “(UN)THINKABLE,” the culmination of 25 years of Phillip Buehler’s work photographing remnants of the Cold War throughout the United States and Europe. Buehler has visited NATO airbases, Cape Canaveral, the Airplane Graveyard, missile bunkers and silos (even within New York City’s borders) among many other sites that are historic, and yet hidden, forbidden, and forgotten. Photographs from this series will be featured in a solo exhibition this September at the Front Room Gallery. For anyone growing up during the Cold War the sense of dread of the world’s annihilation was all to concrete. It was evidenced in films like “Dr. Strangelove” and “The Day After.” Everyone knew the U.S. had enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 5 times over, and assumed something similar about the Russians. For those not old enough to remember this built in fear, don’t worry (worry) it is reawakening. We don’t need another Cuban Missile Crisis to push us to the brink, the renewed tension with the Russians, and now North Korea’s recent entry in the nuclear weapons club is more than enough to unnerve anyone who is watching these conflicts unfold. Phillip Buehler is watching closely. Through this comprehensive series Buehler’s photos show many aspects of this non-war war. In Buehler’s aerial photographs from a military airplane storage yard in Arizona the repetition of the same model of bomber aircraft are so abstractly pattern-based that the overall effect beginnings to feel like a Middle Eastern tapestry...
