Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnev
Contrary to the typical perspective of portrait photography, Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnev poses his nude subjects facing away from the viewer, creating a visual dissonance. In monochromatic images, the Russian photographer examines themes of fear, lust and uncertainty.
Clavijo-Telepnev’s grandfather, Edmundo Clavijo Cubilios, was a well-known Colombian photographer and artist. Clavijo-Telepnev pursued his studies in painting, graphics and polygraphic design at the Moscow Polygraphic Academy, now the Moscow Polytechnic University, graduating in 1986.
Clavijo-Telepnev gained experience through working as a press photographer, as a fashion and advertising photographer and as a lecturer at various institutions including Moscow State University and the Design Academy. Over his career, Clavijo-Telepnev has held memberships in the International Association of Graphic Artists and the Russian Union of Photo Artists. His honors include the Best Cover for Youth Magazines award and Best Photo Project main award for the Benedetta Barzini Portrait.
Romantic, and tinged with melancholy, his work features iconography reminiscent of storybook tales. In 2001, Clavijo-Telepnev launched his own photo art school and published Imperfecto and Impressions. In 2005, he published Cherry Orchard. For a 2012 group show at the Story Museum in Oxford, England, he exhibited photographs with an enticing, yet frightening, quality inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
His work has been exhibited widely in Moscow, including at the Lumiere Gallery, Cervantes Institute and the Russian Modern History State Central Museum. Internationally, his photography was in the 2003 “Remembrance: Russian Post-Modern Nostalgia” at the Yeshiva University Museum in New York, and in exhibitions at Hay Hill gallery in London and the gallery at Grand Hyatt Dubai. English musician Elton John and Welsh film director Peter Greenaway are among the collectors of Clavijo-Telepnev’s artwork.

- B-52 CockpitBy Phillip BuehlerLocated in New York, NY40"40" photograph, edition of 5, signed and editioned on reverse framed in natural wood shadowbox frame This photograph is from a series entitled, “(UN)THINKABLE,” the culmination of 25 years of Phillip Buehler’s work photographing remnants of the Cold War throughout the United States and Europe. Buehler has visited NATO airbases, Cape Canaveral, the Airplane Graveyard, missile bunkers and silos (even within New York City’s borders) among many other sites that are historic, and yet hidden, forbidden, and forgotten. Photographs from this series will be featured in a solo exhibition this September at the Front Room Gallery. For anyone growing up during the Cold War the sense of dread of the world’s annihilation was all to concrete. It was evidenced in films like “Dr. Strangelove” and “The Day After.” Everyone knew the U.S. had enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 5 times over, and assumed something similar about the Russians. For those not old enough to remember this built in fear, don’t worry (worry) it is reawakening. We don’t need another Cuban Missile Crisis to push us to the brink, the renewed tension with the Russians, and now North Korea’s recent entry in the nuclear weapons club is more than enough to unnerve anyone who is watching these conflicts unfold. Phillip Buehler is watching closely. Through this comprehensive series Buehler’s photos show many aspects of this non-war war. In Buehler’s aerial photographs from a military airplane storage yard in Arizona the repetition of the same model of bomber aircraft are so abstractly pattern-based that the overall effect beginnings to feel like a Middle Eastern tapestry...Category
