2020

About the Item

Abstract still life photograph of a magenta cana lily flower on a white sky background Photograph printed on Japanese Kozo paper infused with encaustic Edition 1/12, 36 x 22.5 inches unframed Signed by the artist, lower right The image comes unframed with lucite bars and magnets for installation, hanging instructions will be provided Additional framing is optional, we can share images of framed examples if requested Jeri Eisenberg's photographs, which capture nature's beautiful moments, are printed on panels of thin Japanese Kozo paper. The paper's translucent quality complements the image with delicate sophistication. A thin layer of encaustic is applied on top of the photograph panels, creating a matte, smooth surface. Here a bright magenta cana lily flower is captured with a defocused lens on a white sky background. The print is currently unframed and hangs with two (top and bottom) lucite bars and magnets. We can suggest framing options if you'd like the photograph to be protected with glass. Artist statement: Some of my most recent botanical work was done while in an artist residency in Central Florida. I spent the month of April wandering through both natural preserves and groomed gardens. The exuberance of the plant life in both amazed. The suite of images, Hard Light/Hot Color was my reaction to spending time in the constant sun, with Golden Trumpet trees, Bougainvillea, and dense green canopies. Other recent work reflects travels in Puglia and the Peloponnese. About Jeri Eisenberg: Jeri Eisenberg works primarily with non-traditional and alternative photo-based techniques. She represses or subverts traditional photography's emphasis on the representational qualities of the medium, and emphasizes instead the medium's expressive nature. She employs a strong sense of materiality and seductive surfaces in her work, to evoke sense memories and visceral connections. Her work steadfastly serves as an affirmation of beauty in the everyday natural world, but is tinged with the bittersweet - a reminder of the temporal condition, and an elegy for life. Throughout 2019 and 2020 I spent much of my time in the trenches of a long form assignment for National Geographic Magazine documenting the Great Lakes of North America. This jewel of the planet contains 20% of the worlds fresh water and is home to an annual 6 trillion dollar economy shared by the United States and Canada. On this this particular day I was positioned on the south west shores of Lake Superior, it was stormy and dully gray, the kind that makes you think twice about being out. Thinking photography was likely a foregone conclusion I had decided to scout the periphery of a section of shore line, the waves were crashing in under threatening skies. As I pushed further in a came upon a small pond covered in beautiful lilies that stopped me in my tracks. The car was a good distance away, with the help of my assistant I decided to hike back to the car and grab the under water housing and lights. As soon as I submerged the camera underwater, I knew the scene was special. The dark skies were selectively letting light in, allowing me to sculpt the scene with external lighting...
