Jeri Eisenberg
Warm Waters #20 (Nautical Style Photograph of Blue Ocean Waves in White Frame)

2017

About the Item

Contemporary nautical seascape photograph of blue ocean waves in white frame 36 x 33 inches unframed, 41 x 38 inches framed Japanese Kozo paper infused with encaustic on 3 panels, each panel is 36 inches x 11 inches Framed in white washed wood frame Jeri Eisenberg's photographs, which capture nature's beautiful moments, are printed on panels of thin Japanese Kozo paper. The paper's translucent quality compliments the image with delicate sophistication. A thin layer of encaustic is applied on top of the photograph panels, creating a matte, smooth surface. Here, three panels combine to depict a sapphire ocean wave as it unfurls against the shore. A cool palette of teal, turquoise, royal blue, accented with powdery white and pale sienna, enhances the marine, nautical imagery. The three photograph panels are affixed in the frame with small round pins at the top of each corner. The piece is available in a large white washed wood frame, with a sturdy wire across the back for instant, professional quality hanging. Jeri Eisenberg is represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY. Artist statement: I grew up near the ocean. Not on the ocean, or by the ocean, but close enough so that many long, languid summer days of my childhood were spent there with family, jumping waves and playing in the sand. Adolescence may have changed my companions on the beach blankets, but the ocean remained the backdrop of many halcyon days of warm water and warmer sand. I no longer live near the ocean, but its power and beauty still beckon. Its rhythms are eternal; its majesty, even when cruel, undeniable. This series looks, with perhaps a bit of nostalgia, at the ocean’s cresting and crashing waves, as well as its more tranquil blue/green swells. “It is a wholesome and necessary thing for us to turn again to the earth and in the contemplation of her beauties to know the sense of wonder and humility.” (Rachel Carson) These images are first printed with water-soluble, dye-based inks. This lets me brush or spray the printed images with water to make the dyes run in selected areas. It gives the imagery a very unusual quality as the dyes puddle and pool, and hues that lie just below the surface are brought forward to alter the photographic nature of the initial imagery. Those altered prints are then scanned, printed on long panels of Japanese Kozo paper with archival pigment inks (which are not water soluble), and then infused with molten encaustic medium. This makes the final pieces translucent in highlight areas and allows the work to hang without glazing. About Jeri Eisenberg: Jeri Eisenberg works primarily with non-traditional and alternative photo-based techniques. She represses or subverts traditional photography's emphasis on the representational qualities of the medium, and emphasizes instead the medium's expressive nature. She employs a strong sense of materiality and seductive surfaces in her work, to evoke sense memories and visceral connections. Her work steadfastly serves as an affirmation of beauty in the everyday natural world, but is tinged with the bittersweet - a reminder of the temporal condition, and an elegy for life.
