Horizon Fields LV (Minimalist Landscape photo of Island and Wooden Dock)

2010

About the Item

limited edition archival pigment print 27 x 40 inches, unframed This minimalist, elegant landscape archival pigment print was created by Shelly Lependorf and Stan Shire as part of their "Horizon Fields" series. The image is printed in a warm sepia hue, with accents of green and gray. In the photograph, sea and sky meet at a misty horizon, which marked by a distant island. On the right hand side, a pier extends toward a vanishing point. Artists' statement: The foundation for our work is the photographic image with the optimal quality of light. Selecting the interplay of composition, form, rhythm, and line is the focus for our imagery. Integrating these elements in the computer is the next stage in the process of merging our visual and intuitive sensibilities toward a completed vision. Different perceptual effects arise from recording the world in photographs as opposed to interpreting it in paint: Our goal is not to emulate painting. Conceptual work in all mediums has blurred the line between photographers who make art and artists who use photography. The digital medium has established itself in the natural continuum of art history and the ongoing relationship of art with technology. This work forces us to consider a more serene world while reminding us that no contemporary experience is unmediated; technology touches everything. The use of the computer as a tool does not create; it assists creativity resulting in a synthesis of disciplines to be realized as a limited edition. The combination of archival pigment inks on Crane Fine Art paper framed with archival mattes and backboards insures permanence in excess of 175 years. The creative process will always remain in the mind and the soul of the artist. About the artists: Stan Shire is Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Photographic Imaging department at Community College of Philadelphia. He has a BFA degree in Photography and Film from the Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts) and a Masters degree in Education from Arcadia University. He has studied with Ansel Adams, Ray K. Metzker, Ron Rosenstock, Bert Monroy and John Paul Caponigro. With Adobe Expert Certification in Photoshop, Stan is the author of “HandsOn Photoshop CS5: Tutorial Workshops.” in print and as an iPad app. His work is in the Mamiya Masters of the Medium Gallery (U.K.), Museo Hollander (Fuengirola, Spain), Blue Cross – Corporate Headquarters, Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, and in other private and corporate collections. Since 2002, Stan has worked in collaboration with painter and printmaker Shelly Lependorf. Their work has been shown in numerous galleries and is represented in many corporate and private collections.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
