‘Snowflakes are letters sent from heaven.’ – Ukichiro Nakaya
Risaku Suzuki has been taking pictures of snows and snowscapes since 2004. His sense of sight gained by going into frigid, snowy mountains with a large format camera every year to keep facing the white world beyond control of men, takes us away to nowhere, a place farther from snowy mountains and makes us float in the clear light and the tense air. As the title ‘White’ suggests, questioning the ‘whiteness’ is to question the physicality that brings photography into existence, such as paper, light sensitivity, emulsion and frame, as well as the metaphysics of photography such as light, colors, blank space and outline.
Risaku Suzuki was born in 1963 in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan and now lives and works in Tokyo. He is well known for his dedicated series of pictures from Kumano, Wakayama Prefecture, one of Japan's most sacred places and the home of Suzuki. One of Japan's most prominent photographers, Suzuki presents unmistakably Japanese subjects - like cherry blossoms and snow - which are both timeless and refreshingly new. ‘In my opinion, contemporary photography should be based on conceptual thoughts and committed to creation. It takes strength and enthusiasm to make photography your goal in life. The opinion that pictures of every day life, like those of his dog, his girlfriend and the like, are equal to creative expression, would be too undemanding. To really emphasize the ‘power of photography’, deep passion is central - in every age and situation - and the ability of a photographer to visualize a concept.’ – Risaku Suzuki

Edition of 9 plus 2 artist's proofs (#2/9) print only Originally from Excelsior, Minnesota, Erik Madigan Heck (*1983) is one of the youngest and most promising American fashion photographers of the contemporary art scene. In his relatively short career the artist developed a personal way of looking at fashion, as Nathalie Herschdorfer underlines in her essay "Minimal and pure: Erik Madigan Heck fashion photographs". His work is characterized by a clear and distinctive treatment of colours and patterns, which makes it unequivocal. "Heck’s photographs push the concept to new limits, creating imagery that goes beyond traditional fashion photography. Meticulously constructed and enhanced with bright colours, blurring the line between the clothes and the background, his images play with this idea of ‘future’ silhouettes". – Nathalie Herschdorfer In 2017 Heck published his first monograph with Thames & Hudson and Abrams Books titled 'Old Future'. In his 'Old Future' series Madigan Heck explores the intersection of photography and painting as he borrows from and bends the genres of fashion photography, landscape painting and portraiture. Madigan Heck is a regular contributor to The New York Times...Category
