When we look at the sky, we see pure color, even though it consists entirely of air which is transparent and has no color itself. The color is only created with the sunlight penetrating it - similar to a rainbow - and is directly dependent on the relationship between sky, sun and viewer. The viewer's point of view determines the appearance of the object in a radical way. If you change your point of view, the sky changes with it. It is precisely this fundamental impossibility of a neutral view that is of interest to Ulrike Königshofer. The photo series “On the other Side of the Sky” (2019) shows views of the sky that were taken at the same point in time at two distant locations, facing each other.
In her works, the artist Ulrike Königshofer often engages with the recording and registration of information about the world. This engagement originated in sensory perception, which takes place as a physical process within the body yet still generates knowledge about externals. How close can this perceived image come to the world itself? Königshofer’s works explore this connection between an object and the extent to which it can be represented.
Ulrike Königshofer war born in Styria, Austria, in 1981. She lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Educated at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Graz (1995-2000) and University of Applied Arts Vienna (2000-05). Many solo and group exhibitions in Austria and abroad.
