The American photographer, Melvin Sokolsky, began working in the 1950’s during one of fashion photography’s golden ages. Born and raised in New York City, Sokolsky initiated his career as a photographer in his early 20’s. At 21 years old, he began photographing for Harper's Bazaar. He went on to have a proliferate career in editorial portraiture, advertising, and fashion photography. In this platinum-print image, from Sokolsky’s proliferate series often referred to as “Sokolsky’s Bubbles”, a model strikes a remarkably elegant pose as she stands inside a plexiglass bubble. The image reflects the chicness of Parisian society, showcasing the city’s beautiful architecture and couture fashion. In this black-and-white photograph, Sokolsky reflects his creative ambition and ability to think outside the box. His work is characterized by a sense of fantasy and invention, and the influence of Surrealism is apparent in his whimsical plays with proportion and reality.
