The photographs of Arthur Elgort created a sensation in his 1971 debut in British Vogue. He brought a breath of fresh air into the world of fashion photography. His relaxed and easy snapshot style allowed his subjects to move freely in the frame. His young and pretty models wore less make-up, were more lively, and moved about casually in the natural light that he favored. His outdoor locations such as city streets, pools, and beaches came to characterize his style. Arthur quickly became one of the best-known and most emulated photographers. His style changed the face of fashion photography.
This piece, seemingly a snapshot, captures two of the most famous Models of the 80s and 90s. The contrast between the models' emphatically feminine styling and the masculine cigars that they casually hold up to the camera is emphasised by the high-contrast black and white of the shot. Elgort turns a simple portrait into an exciting work of art.
