About the Item

Photography. Cecile Plaisance's evocative photographic career began with a doll. As a young girl inundated with images of beauty, Plaisance started taking photos of the plastic playmate who was a constant fixture in the world of young girls - Barbie. At first, she aimed to make life more lighthearted by creating sweet reminders of childhood innocence. As Plaisance's photography progressed, she linked Barbie to the modern woman juggling daily life while playing with her iconic femininity as a wife, mother, friend, and lover. Women aspire to live fully and intensely multi-faceted lives despite differences in cultures, clothes, and career paths. The artist adds humor to her Barbie character by targeting men who expect sexiness in women amid daily mundanity. Plaisance's childhood idol supports the challenges of women today as they defend their rights, desires, and hard-fought freedom. Cecile Plaisance’s evocative career began with a doll - but not just any doll. The biggest names in fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, Yves St. Laurent, Christian Louboutin, Christian Lacroix and many others had all paid tribute to her. And as a young girl who loved all things beautiful, she included herself on the list by taking photos of the only plastic playmate she admired who was a constant fixture in the world of girls who dressed and undressed her daily - Barbie, of course. She was so successful at it that her early compositions of the icon made stars of her first snapshots. Her goal? To make life more lighthearted (and for some perhaps, more palatable) as a reminder of the innocence of childhood everywhere and a chance to bring those sweet memories back to life.

  • Twins, Jungle Series
    By Reine Paradis
    Located in Miami, FL
Limited and signed edition number 1 of 3. Reine Paradis constructs narrative photographs staging herself as the central figure in a surreal landscape. Paradis is dressed in orange in her images and is shown interacting in color filled landscapes. Shot in many locations throughout America, the photo series "Jungle" takes us on an introspective journey across a symbolic and chromatic world, projected above the limit of reality and imagination. All the scenes are imagined and conceptualized before shooting in real locations. Once the scene is visualized in it’s entirety, Paradis makes sketches and paints the scene to use as a blue print when photographing the final scene. All the costumes, accessories and origamis are meticulously designed and prepared according to the initial vision of the scene. Each scene is an adventure and a story in and of itself. Reine Paradis (b. 1989 in Southern France...
