About the Item
"The 2021 photo performance Blue Flight reflects the ways Paredes draws from numerous spheres including her autobiography, literature, mythology, and spirituality, to grapple with the complexities of her identity and place in the world. Here, she stands and turns away from the viewer as if submitting to an idealized vision of nature, to a more perfect realm. Paredes, surrounded and covered by a textile embellished with the stylized form of a heron, appears ethereal, as if approaching a form of weightlessness. This bird possesses a multitude of associations across cultures — it has stood for self-determination and self-reliance, and as well, for stillness and tranquility, values Paredes embodies as she is subsumed into the background. As the artist notes, the heron is a beautiful bird but one with an aggressive gaze. In the Japanese tradition, the heron drives away plague and returns with purity, making it an apt symbol for our times. Although these varied allusions are not made explicit — Paredes has long resisted linear readings of her work — they are there, underscoring the way she manifests both mystery and meaning in her oeuvre.
The herons in Blue Flight and the botanical and animal motifs visible in other photographs conjure nature at a remove, to be sure, but for Paredes, they point to a more sublime state of being and to her deeply felt connection to the land and to animals. More broadly, the environment and its degradation is a theme she has woven through much of her work across artistic media."

Cecilia Paredes
Multidisciplinary artist in essence, Cecilia Paredes uses her body as a performative vessel merging painting, sculpture and photography. While she initially appears as the main subject in each of her “photo performance”, her work explores a wide range of themes such as exile, integration, connection to nature, as well as biocentrism. Playing an active role in the narration, the background of her compositions is often made of patterns borrowed from tapestry or wallpapers filling the entire frame including her body. Her identity, hence camouflaged in the backdrop, is distilled to a quintessentially feminine shape inviting the viewer to ponder the ways in which individuals are informed by their natural and cultural environments. Additionally, the omnipresence of vegetal or animal design depicts an ideal world where humanity blends in rather than dominates. Born and raised in Peru, Paredes’ political activism as a student in Lima in the 1970s forced her to leave the country. She has lived in Mexico and Costa Rica, and is now sharing her time between Philadelphia and Lima. Her nomadic lifestyle pieces together the motive for her need of addressing the process of constant relocation and displacement. Indeed, Paredes defines her life outside of Peru as a form of exile, a shearing away from family, culture and nature. For the past 30 years, Cecilia Paredes has exhibited in the most renowned museums, from the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia, to the Lowe Museum in Miami, USA, via the Royal Museum of Arts in Brussels, Belgium. Her “photo performances'' are now part of countless private, corporate and museum collections internationally. Additionally, as a conservationist she participates in seminars such as “Art changing attitudes towards the environment” which was organized by the United Nations in 2008.

- #112, 1970s Nightclubs of Chicago South Side - Rare Vintage Silver Gelatin PrintLocated in London, GB“I walked into a timeless place … full of supporting actors and actresses of every conceivable role,” Abramson wrote in Light: On the South Side, published by Chicago’s Numero Group in 2009. “Brassai, who photographed nocturnal Paris around 1930, had always been one of my favourite. Having seen, his pictures and, later, read about his experiences, I was fascinated by the implied romance with which he viewed his photography. (…) When I photographed on the South Side, especially in Peppers Hideout, it was very much in recognition of a Brassai–type world. Whether it be ambiance, gestures, or dress, there seemed to be a direct correlation with the Parisian bistros and dance halls that Brassai had photographed.” - Michael Abramson, “Black Night Clubs of Chicago’s South Side”, May 1977. About the Photographer: Michael L Abramson was born in New Jersey in 1948, the late American photographer graduated with Master of Photography from Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1977. His work was regularly featured in Time, New York Times, Newsweek, People, Forbes, Harpers, Wall Street Journal and other popular American and international magazines. He was a highly sought after commercial portrait photographer and photojournalist. His subjects comprised celebrities, prominent stars from sport, politics and the entertainment industry included Bill Clinton, Steve Jobs, Steven Spielberg, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and many more. Yet it was his 1970s series documenting the Chicago South side club scene that made Abramson’s name. Influenced by Brassaï’s photographs of the 1920s Paris, Abramson caught the stylish nightlife of the funk and soul era in full, alluring swing. His work was exhibited frequently since 1978, including a solo show at Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, in 2014 and in the same year the group show on American Photography since 1950 at Madison Museum of Contemporary Arts (US).
