About the Item

Archival inks on rag paper Signed, titled, dated, and numbered, verso 14 x 14 inches (Edition of 15) 20 x 20 inches (Edition of 7) This artwork is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Doris Mitsch writes about her technique: The process I use for some of my pictures is a bit unusual, with digital technology replacing not only the darkroom, but the camera as well. I sometimes (but not always) use a flatbed scanner as a camera, which offers interesting opportunities and limitations. Unlike a traditional camera, it captures an image by slowly moving both the light and the lens across the subject, essentially lighting and photographing it from multiple angles in one long exposure. This produces a single image stitched together from thousands of tiny slivers, to which I then make endless, minute adjustments. This offers a view that can’t be seen through a camera lens or the naked eye, and illumination that can’t be duplicated with fixed lights. It also offers a uniquely detailed view, as I magnify each image and work on it down to a level of detail that will never be seen in the finished print. Full-resolution prints of some of the images can be as wide as sixty inches, and enlargements as big as 300 inches (25 feet) wide have been made without loss of detail. People sometimes refer to this kind of work as scanner photography, scanography, scanograms, flower scans, scanning, and so on. I still call it photography, because a photograph is a picture made with light, and today there are many alternative processes for making photographs, including various camera-less methods.

By Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber
    Located in New York, NY
Archival pigment print Signed and numbered, verso 30 x 40 inches 40 x 50 inches 50 x 60 inches (Total edition of 15) This artwork is offered by CLAMP, located in New York City. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber's series, "The City" (2005-2013) moves indoors to a variety of architectural interiors that could be found in our own urban surroundings. While much of Nix and Gerber’s earlier work was grounded in personal experience, this series exists more in the realm of speculation. These public spaces lie deteriorating and neglected while nature slowly reclaims them. The reason for their decline is unclear, but the effects are not. Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber have been making art collaboratively for over sixteen years. Originally from the American Midwest, now based in Brooklyn, they construct meticulously detailed model environments and photograph the results. For the last decade they have found inspiration in their urban surroundings, imagining a future mysteriously devoid of mankind. Their miniature fake landscapes and interiors reflect a love of science fiction and dystopian entertainment (think “Blade Runner,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Logan’s Run...

Candice creates her donut portraits from her original photographs of donuts. No software program of any kind is used in creating the portrait, Candice goes through the arduous task of looking through her photos to select just the right images with the correct texture, color and highlights that are needed for each area of the portrait. Nowadays, so many people are using programs to create images, it's nice to know that this artist is using her artistic talent to create these intricate realistic portraits. The Photographic arrangements of Candice CMC receive an immediate response on the part of the viewer. We have included in this listing an image of Candice working in the studio and an image of some of the worldwide media attention she has received. The art consists of over 1000 extremely sharp images of donuts, Candice CMC uses the the donuts as her palate, the same as if she was creating the portrait with oil paints. Candice first photographs the donuts and then studies the characteristics of each so that she can arrange them according to their tones, colors, values and intensity to create the iconic portrait. She chooses the correct placement of just the right donut for each area of the artwork. The art was created to appear as a pop art image of hundreds of random donuts. The WOW factor comes when you go to look at the artwork through a camera and see the donuts small and the portrait appears. Collectors are amazed by the very realistic portrait when viewed through their phone and can't understand how it's done. At the gallery, collectors come in and see Candice CMC's donuts and say, we love donuts and then we tell them to take a picture of it with their phone and they hold up their phone and we immediately hear Oh wow! Candice has created iconic portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Alfred E. Neuman, Van Gogh, Superman, Joker Captain Jack...
