About the Item
Pamela Ellis Hawkes's innovative photography revitalizes antique traditions of still life painting with a playful contemporary spirit and a keen eye for seductively mysterious beauty. Her work often exposes viewers' differing expectations from photography and painting, and this surprising parallax illuminates of the changing meanings of artistic images in the visual cultures of the past and the rapidly changing present.
This print from the artist’s “Baroque Flowers” series is a photograph of the artist’s drawing on a chalkboard digitally blended with a photograph of a well-known flower painting from a book or public collection. Today’s viewers generally are remote from the symbolic conventions shared by the painters and their contemporary audience, and from the contemporary social and economic implications of exotic cut flowers and sumptuous spreads of food. Across a gulf of culture, depth of meaning has receded, and today these paintings are pretty flower pictures containing only traces of their past significance.
Signed and dated lower left, titled and numbered lower right in margin beneath the image.
The edition comprises 10 prints total at either of two sizes.
Print #1 is framed in a white mat with textured silver-colored wood frame. UV glass. Frame was new in 2016 and may show slight wear consistent with professional gallery exhibition and storage.
