Samuel Field
Orthochromatic Positive - Black & White Photography of a Typewriter

1987

About the Item

Samuel Field's still life of an Olivetti Typewriter, is given depth in the orthochromatic process he has used. Isolated in monochrome you appreciate the details of this vintage utilitarian object. This artwork is a limited edition of 10 lustre photographic c-print, dry-mounted to aluminium, presented in a museum board white window mount and a choice of black or white box frame fitted with anti-reflective UV70% glass. It is signed and numbered on reverse accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. This artwork is available in other sizes and pairs well with our other artworks in our 1stdibs store. Photographing in the eighties, in a time of flux and change for the country, Field seems to have sought out the last vestiges of a country that was being reconstructed, hardened and sold off. Feeling a sense that certain places and people may soon be consigned to the pages of history, Field was compelled to capture what he saw around him. The ordinary and the everyday became the backdrop for his images that, what we now know today, portrays a more innocent time. A wry smile and a nod to the traditions of documentary photography provide the backbone for these glimpses of the recent past. Yet they are not designed to be a Lewis Hine-esque campaign for social reform; with the passage of time these photographs have become a rich and valuable reference paying homage to a lost era.

Phil is a man of extraordinary talents. It seems that his passion is to take an everyday object or event, and show it in an entirely new and exciting way.” Martin Scorsese. Phil’s work is represented in MOMA, The Museum of the Moving Image, and The George Eastman Museum of Photography. His first photographs were studies for his paintings, before he launched a career in print advertising. He eventually became a Director / DP for film and television for a vast base of national and international clients with his wife Patricia as Partner and Producer. In the 1980’s and 90’s Phil was the go to person for Special Effects in Television and Cinema, also best known for his graphic conceptual still lives, and his consummate mastery of lighting, and design.
