About the Item

"Wayne Thiebaud: Survey 1947-1976" Show Poster from the Oakland Museum 1976-1977 Silkscreen poster from the Oakland Museum 1976-1977 show "Wayne Thiebaud: Survey 1947-1976" with a printing of an original drawing (Six Candied Apples, 1968) by Wayne Theibaud (American, 1920-2021). The painting in the poster is of six candied apples, a common motif for Thiebaud. The poster is adapted in a stylized manner, simplifying the drawing into a four color, high contrast version. Presented in a red aluminum frame. Frame size: 30.5"H x 23"W Poster size: 30"H x 22.5"W Wayne Thiebaud was born November 15, 1920 in Mesa, Arizona. His family moved to Long Beach, CA when he was six months old. During high school, Thiebaud apprenticed for a summer at the Walt Disney Studio and then continued his artistic education at Los Angeles trade school. He earned a degree from Sacramento State College in 1941 and worked as a cartoonist, designer and served as an artist in the United States Army Air Force. In 1950, at the age of thirty, he enrolled in Sacramento State where he earned a Master's Degree in 1952 and began teaching at Sacramento City College. In 1960, he became assistant professor at the University of California, Davis, where he remained through the 1970s and influenced numerous students. However, he did not have much following among Conceptualists because of his adherence to basically traditional disciplines, emphasis on hard work as a supplement to creativity, and love of realism. On a leave of absence, he spent time in New York City where he became friends with Willem De Kooning and Franz Kline and was influenced by these abstractionists as well as proto pop artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. During this time, he began a series of very small paintings based on images of food displayed in windows where he focused on their basic geometric shapes. In 1960 he had his first one-man shows in San Francisco and in New York City. These shows received little notice, but two years later, a 1962 Sidney Janis Gallery exhibition in New York officially launched Pop Art, bringing Thiebaud national recognition although he disclaimed being anything other than a painter of illusionistic form. In 1962 Thiebaud's work was included, along with Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Edward Ruscha, and others, in the ground-breaking "New Painting of Common Objects," curated by Walter Hopps at the Pasadena Art Museum. This exhibition is historically important as one of the first Pop Art exhibitions in America. He was associated with the Pop Art painters because of his interest in objects of mass culture, however, his works, executed during the 1950s-1960s, slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists, suggesting that Thiebaud may have had an influence on the movement. Thiebaud uses heavy pigment and exaggerated colors to depict his subjects, and the well-defined shadows characteristic of advertisements are almost always included in his work. In addition to food and consumer goods, Thiebaud has painted landscapes, streetscapes, and popular characters such as Mickey Mouse. His works are noted for their hyper realism, and are in some ways similar to Edward Hopper's work, who was fascinated with mundane scenes from everyday American life. In 1964 he made his first prints at Crown Point Press, and has continued to make prints throughout his career. In 1967 his work was shown at the Venice Biennale Internationale. QUOTE: "Heroes are really important in our society, but really the things that matter most are family and home, whether it's your daily cup of coffee or a warm bathrobe—the simple pleasures are really important in life. Wouldn't it be great to have a society where you didn't need heroes?" • 'Flowers' original abstract linocut by Wisconsin artist Schomer Lichtner
    By Schomer Lichtner
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Flowers' is an original linocut by Wisconsin-based artist Schomer Lichtner. The composition presents a scattered floral still life amongst abstracted shadows and forms, rendered with Lichtner's quintessential abstract sensibilities. This print is one from a series that each depict abstracted subjects in black silhouette, taking pleasure in the materiality of the linocut technique. The free forms of the flower resemble the lyrical mid-century works of the French artist Henri Matisse, which combined with these material concerns demonstrate Lichter's modern sensibilities. The prints from this series are unusual because of how below the image, Lichtner also includes his Chinese seal and a linocut remarque of a cow, each of which act as an additional signature of the artist on the artwork. Linocut in black and red on Permalife white wove paper 4 x 5.25 inches, image 11.5 x 8.75 inches, sheet 16.5 x 13.63 inches, frame Signed in pencil, below image, lower right. Edition 1/100 in pencil, below image, lower left. Chinese signature stamp in red, below image, lower right. Remaque of a cow in red, below image, lower right. Permalife watermark to paper. Framed to conservation standards in a shadow-box style mounting, using 100 percent rag matting, museum glass, and housed in a silver-finish wood moulding. Overall excellent condition with no creases or discoloration. Milwaukee artist Schomer Lichtner was well known for his whimsical cows and ballerinas and abstract imagery. He and his late wife Ruth Grotenrath, both well-known Wisconsin artists, began their prolific careers as muralists for WPA projects, primarily post offices. Lichtner also painted murals for industry and private clients. Schomer was a printmaker and produced block prints, lithographs, and serigraph prints. His casein (paint made from dairy products) and acrylic paintings are of the rural Wisconsin landscape and farm animals. He became interested in cows when he and Ruth spent summers near Holy Hill in Washington County. According to David Gordon, director of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Schomer Lichtner had a tremendous joie de vivre and expressed it in his art. Schomer Lichtner was nationally known for his whimsical paintings and sculptures of black- and white-patterned Holstein cows...

  • Safety Pin from George Nama's suite " Tight Rope " 1974
    By George Nama
    Located in Paonia, CO
Safety Pin by American artist George Nama is from ” Tightrope ” a suite of ten lino-cuts published by Monument Press 1974. We see a stark image of a large safety pin with a wire binding it’s movement which changes the viewers concept of what they think they are perceiving. In this series of ten lino-cuts Nama takes ordinary household objects and makes them inoperable by wrapping a wire around the workable part of the object and presenting one object at a time. There seems to be a sense of humor and at the same time profundity with each image. All copies are individually signed and numbered by the artist. This is copy number 5/50 and is touched by hand with watercolor on Arches cover stock paper and printed by Monument Press in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This print is in excellent condition with the first two letters of the title having been smudged by the artist when he hand wrote it in pencil on the lower left side of the print. George Allen Nama was born in Homestead near Pittsbugh, Pennsylvania in 1939.
