About the Item

Lithograph, 1981 Handsigned by the artist in pencil and numbered 86/100 Publisher : Maeght - Lelong SA (Paris) Printer : Pierre Badey (Paris) Catalog : Mason - Putman 392 Arches paper Monogrammed proof with brush A magnificent lithograph by Abraham van Velde (1895-1881), a solitary painter whose work is unclassifiable if not among the best of the second half of the 20th century. The artist's painted work is not very abundant, about 500 works. For him, the practice of lithography was essential for the dissemination of his work. This scarcity of the painted work was due to the difficulty of creation or rather to the scarcity of the good inner state so that the work can be born, can occur. Van Velde was looking for and waiting more than anything for that "unique" moment when "all his forces of imagination and creation" were brought together. This is indeed the case here. The lithograph is nearly 40 inches long and is among the artist's largest. It was made in 1981, the last year of van Velde's life and the apotheosis of his career. Here, the complexity of the forms equals the power of the colors. Neither takes precedence over the other. On the contrary. LIttle is known about the the genesis of the artist's works because no one could be present in the studio during the work sessions. The title is also mysterious. Van Velde rarely titled his works. He often did so at the request of the publisher or printer. Vent de sable could be the ochre band that runs along the top edge of the composition. The composition is divided into three parts. The sides show more of a vertical rise, while the central one is more horizontal. Each part gives rhythm to the whole composition and has its own rhythm. Van Velde masters his art admirably. The colors are very fresh and luminous. Such a work fills a wall by itself, so remarkable is its quality of presence. LCD4916
