About the Item

Hand-colored engraved map from "Atlas, Designed to Illustrate the Geography of the Heavens" by Connecticut school teacher Elijah H. Burritt. This popular star atlas, printed in several editions from 1833-1856, illustrating the brightest stars and constellations of the night sky as well as illustrating their accompanying figural depictions. This map depicts the Northern Hemisphere and includes Ursa Major (Greater Bear or Big Dipper), Ursa Minor (The Lesser Bear or Little Dipper), Draco (The Dragon), The Lynx, Auriga (the Wagoner or the Charioteer), Cygnus (the Swan), Camelopardalis (the Giraffe), Boötes (the Herdsman), Greek myth heroes Hercules and Perseus, and (King) Cepheus and (Queen) Cassiopeia. Created by Burritt to be an affordable teaching tool for schools, this publication was immensely popular and praised for promoting knowledge of astronomy. Inscriptions: Top: [left] PL.
