Horst Antes is a German painter, sculptor, engraver and lithographer born on 28 October 1936 in Heppenheim.
A painter of the New Figuration movement, Horst Antes was a student at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts from 1957 to 1959, where he was taught by the wood engraver HAP Grieshaber, an engaging character who taught him a solid technique.
His painting is linked to the international trend of narrative figuration. Although he won numerous prizes, this movement was not yet as popular as it later became. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Antes was an isolated and pioneering figure. Critical interest focused on this young painter, who had emerged unscathed from a Germany that had been disqualified in every respect and had repudiated all forms of living art, and whose works were in the wake of the Die Brücke, Blaue Reiter and Bauhaus movements of the 1930s. In a brief initial period, Antes' Expressionism can be compared to that of Max Beckmann and George Grosz, i.e. to the gritty Expressionism that manifested itself in the distraught Germany after its defeat in 1918.
But it was in 1960 that he gave an image of his personality by creating a highly schematised character that became his personal theme, perhaps influenced by Oskar Schlemmer, whose massive graphics encircle surfaces that are usually very vivid and colourful, with a certain sobriety of treatment. This being, a sort of gnome, has no torso. Its arms are fitted directly into the head under the eyes, and the legs under the chin. But to compensate for this lack of body, the head always has eyes, superimposed or not, or two pairs of superimposed eyes, as we sometimes find in Jawlensky or Paul Klee. These figures inspire less disgust than pity.
In the 1970s, he incorporated pieces of cardboard or rags into his paintings on canvas to enrich the textures and increase the strangeness of his figures. As a precursor of the new neo-expressionist figurations that appeared at the time in reaction against the domination of abstract and conceptual art, it seems likely that Antes wanted to testify to a despair of the human condition.

Horst Antes
Horst Antes (born 28 October 1936 Heppenheim, Germany) is a German artist and sculptor. After his Abitur, he studied from 1957 to 1959 under the important woodcutter HAP Grieshaber at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (today known as the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe) in Karlsruhe. In 1959, the artist's work was honoured with two prizes, art prize of the city of Hanover and the Pankofer prize on the occasion of the German Youth Art prize. In his early paintings, Antes sought a path somewhere between figurative painting and the L'Art Informel. One of his most important role models was Willem de Kooning. Around 1960 Antes discovered his 'Kopffüßler' (literal translation: Head-Footer), a form which preoccupied the artist in numerous variations and artistic techniques. By 1963 his 'Kopffüßler' was fully developed in its stylistic and contextual premises and became also compulsory for his sculptural work, which began the same year. The artist was given several scholarships and awards in the 1960s, including the Villa-Romana-Prize in Florence in 1962 and the Villa Massimo scholarship in Rome in 1963. Three years later, aged only 29, Antes accepted a teaching post at the Akademie in Karlsruhe. This was followed by a post as a professor also in Karlsruhe which he held from 1967 to 1973, as well as a one-year guest-professorship at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin. The artist resumed teaching at the Akademie in Karlsruhe in 1984 and continued teaching there for another 16 years. The regional capital awarded him the Hans-Molfenter-prize in 1989. Since 1990 Antes has been living and working in Karlsruhe, Florence and Berlin. His oeuvre includes not only paintings and graphic art, but also sculptures in public spaces. His works are exhibited throughout the world and are represented in all the most important German collections, et al. at the Kunsthall Hamburg, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Nationalgalerie Berlin, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Karl E. Fortess (1907-1993) was a painter, printmaker and teacher, of Boston, Massachusetts and Woodstock, N.Y. Fortess was born in Antwerp, Belgium on October 13, 1907, and became an American citizen in 1923. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York, and the Woodstock School of Painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi. In 1937 the Works Progress Administration sent him and several other artists to Alaska to document the towns, villages, and remote wilderness landscapes (Pemberton, “Alaska art museum collects WPA’s Depression works from the territory,” Columbia Daily Tribune, November 9, 2003). Trains, trucks, and industrial buildings were what Karl Fortess envisioned when the Public Works of Art Project suggested that he depict “the American Scene.” His work bears the influence of Surrealism, Russsian Constructivist art and Cubism. He was part of a circle of left leaning artists loosley involved with the WPA which included Sol Wilson, Isaac Soyer, Louis Lozowick, Abraham Harriton, Ben Shahn, William Gropper, Nahum Tschacbasov, Morris Shulman, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Louis Slobodkin, Adolf Dehn, Le Corbusier and Louis Schanker. Karl Fortress taught at the Art Students League, Brooklyn Museum Art School, Louisiana State University, Fort Wright College, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. He was a member of the Artists Equity Association, Society of American Graphic Artists, American Association of University Professors, and the British Film Institute. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946, was named an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1960 and elected to full Academician in 1971. Fortess taught at many different schools, including Boston University School of Fine Art, where he also created an archive of interviews with more than two hundred and fifty contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists including many with with artists associated with the Woodstock, N.Y. art community.
