Howard Hodgkin
Blood: Howard Hodgkin hand painted Abstract Red Brown Coral and Black

1983-1985

About the Item

Abstract, large scale red, orange, crimson, black, and pink scene with lines, shapes and hand painted brushstroke texture. This dramatic Howard Hodgkin work is ideal for display in minimalist, modern and contemporary spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, expressionist, and abstract. The rectangular core of this elemental composition explodes with color: deep red and pink in gouache and watercolor are framed with black and grey brushstrokes. The expressive mark-making in this print is an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Hodgkin used his hand as a mark-making tool, combining these textures with loose and urgent brushwork. A spatter of orange enhances this sense of movement. Lithograph from three aluminium plates printed in three shades of black, with hand colouring in watercolour (black wash border, pink wash ground) and gouache (a red wash ground, yellow and crimson). Edition 50; this impression AP 13/16. Signed by the artist with initials and numbered AP 13/16 lower center in white pencil. Printed from two of the same plates as Sand, 1983. Blood evinces the increase in emotional content and intensity in Hodgkin’s work after the late 1970s. His marks are more fluid and lush due to an increased looseness of handling. These later works show a richness and a surface texture previously lacking – mainly due to the application of gouache or watercolor by hand but also to the more tonal techniques of aquatint and soft-ground etching with chalk-like lines. • DH in Hollywood (David Hockney) Howard Hodgkin colorful abstract painting framed
    By Howard Hodgkin
    Located in New York, NY
Howard Hodgkin based this print on a trip he took to visit his good friend and fellow Petersburg Press collaborator David Hockney in Los Angeles. The mid-eighties saw new levels of abstraction in Hodgkin’s work, building exuberantly off the ambiguous spaces of his earlier work. The artist used six colors of paint, producing a unique depth and texture to each print in this edition. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in DH in Hollywood at Petersburg Press, where he was a long-time collaborator. Soft-ground etching allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, giving his prints the characteristic black brushstrokes seen in this print. Paper 8.4 x 11 in. / 21.3 × 27.9 cm Soft-ground etching (from one plate) with hand coloring in watercolor (orange-red, brown, and green) and oil pastel (red and...

  • Jarid's Porch by Howard Hodgkin: abstract black grey and yellow gouache
    By Howard Hodgkin
    Located in New York, NY
Black and yellow, hand painted abstract work by Howard Hodgkin. A bright yellow calligraphy or graffiti-like mark is set against translucent grey. While most Hodgkin works are abstract, the artist usually includes observational gestures: for example, a room viewed from above becomes a grouping of soft shapes. Here, the fragmented corner of a wraparound porch is a yellow, calligraphic angle floating in shrouds of grey. Wide ribbons of velvety gouache wash over the incandescent shape’s border, with polite ink blots, frantic scribbles, and measured brushstrokes. These marks seem to set the yellow shape in place like a gem’s bezel...

  • Howard Hodgkin Early Evening in the Museum of Modern Art: abstract black white
    By Howard Hodgkin
    Located in New York, NY
Large scale black and white abstract interior scene with dots, lines, brushstrokes, and hand painting in grey, to hang in contemporary, modern and minimalist spaces. While British pop artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield numbered amongst Howard Hodgkin's circle of friends, Hodgkin's work is painterly, emotional, expressionist, and abstract. Early Evening in the Museum of Modern Art, by Howard Hodgkin. Signed by the artist, numbered 47/100, and dated 79 lower center in red crayon. Soft-ground etching printed from the same plate as 'Late Afternoon in the Museum of Modern Art', with hand coloring in black gouache on Grey BFK Rives mould-made paper. This print depicts an abstracted scene, perhaps a sculpture in front of a window in the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, in Hodgkin's signature painterly style. The expressive mark-making in this print is an example of the artist’s movement in the late 70s towards pronounced gestures. Wide areas of deep black pigment contrast urgent swipes of ink. Always seeking greater richness in his prints, Hodgkin layered ink and hand coloring in this print, rendering each impression in the edition unique. Part of a series of four prints reflecting on a visit to...

  • Artist and Model Howard Hodgkin - green and yellow etching watercolour gouache
    By Howard Hodgkin
    Located in New York, NY
This vibrant abstract orange and green print is part of a group of soft-ground etchings (Artist and Model, Artist and Model (in green and yellow), These…Plants) by Howard Hodgkin. The two versions of Artist and Model are printed from the same plates, but in different colors. In this iteration, green watercolor contrasts beautifully with marigold orange, crimson, and terra cotta red. Seen in all three prints is a bust in silhouette before a window. Artist and Model is a surprising name, as Hodgkin never painted or drew from a model. Signed by the artist with initials, dated 1980, and numbered lower center in red crayon. Soft-ground etching with hand coloring in a yellow watercolor wash and green gouache on Stoneridge mould-made etching paper. Edition 100. Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Artist and Model (in green and yellow) at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s. Catalogue reference: Elizabeth Knowles...
