Basquiat began his career as a graffiti artist in New York City. A close friend of Andy Warhol, they were both important figures in the underground movement. His style was violent, colourful and full or character showing influences from Primitive Art, graffiti and anatomical drawings. The work takes its title from a strange event which took place in New Hampshire in 1961. Betty and Barney Hill claimed they had been abducted by extraterrestrials. Theirs was the first widely-publicised claim of alien abduction. The painting includes his omnipresent themes of death, money and the supernatural.
