About the Item

Julian Schnabel Mujer Primaveral, 1996 Hand-painted, 15-color silkscreen with poured resin 40 x 30 inches (102 x 76 cm) Signed and numbered edition of 80 "Sexual Spring-like Winter" is a large painterly work, created with layers of pink and resin by the art and film world's favorite enfant terrible, Julian Schnabel. The artist and director recounted that he was inspired to create the "Sexual Spring-like Winter" series after trekking home in the snow to be greeted by his wife at the time, who was wearing a beautiful bright pink blouse. Julian Schnabel (America, b.1951) is an artist, filmmaker, musician, and writer, best known in the art community for his hasty rise to fame after the exhibition of his famous Plate Paintings at Mary Boone Gallery in 1979. Rapidly achieving notoriety in the late 1970s, Schnabel became the infamous star of the internationalist Neo-Expressionist movement in the 1980s, with his works on unusual materials such as velvet, and garnering as much attention through his brash remarks and self-aggrandization as through his art. Along with fellow Neo-Expressionists David Salle, Eric Fischl, and Sigmar Polke, Schnabel’s art can be seen as a reaction against the cool compositions of Minimalism and Conceptualism, in its rough texture and violently expressive return to addressing the human condition in painting.

Ross Bleckner FLOATING RED Year: 2019 Medium: Archival pigment print on Innova Etching Cotton Rag 315 gsm fine art paper Size: 42 x 70 inches (107 x 178 cm) Edition: 30 Price: $7,000 Also sold as a set with Floating Red Glowing and contemplative, Ross Bleckner’s work blends abstraction with recognizable symbols to create meditations on perception, transcendence and loss. Ross Bleckner was born in 1949 in New York and grew up in the prosperous town of Hewlett Harbor on Long Island. The first art exhibition he saw—The Responsive Eye, a show of Op art on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965—had a strong impact on him. He decided to become an artist when he was in college, studying with Sol LeWitt and Chuck Close at New York University, where he earned a BA in 1971. Two years later, he completed an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he met David Salle. After moving back to New York, Bleckner purchased and moved into a Tribeca loft building in 1974. Painter Julian Schnabel rented three floors of the building, and the Mudd Club, a nightclub frequented by musicians and artists, occupied space there from 1977 to 1983. Bleckner sold the building in 2004. His first solo exhibition was held in 1975 at Cunningham Ward Gallery in New York. In 1979 he began his long association with Mary Boone Gallery in New York, which championed several of the so-called art stars of the 1980s. In 1981 Bleckner met Thomas Ammann, an important Swiss art dealer who went on to collect his work. Bleckner’s early 1980s Stripe...

  • Arles/Miami by Malcolm Morley Miami beach postcard portfolio Van Gogh Arles
    By Malcolm Morley
    Located in New York, NY
These colorful, exuberant and expressionistic works depict a series of hand-drawn Miami beach and tourism postcards in various states of permutation and collapse, at times curling in on themselves and dissolving into glorious, saturated scribbles, the final piece printed with shimmering silver in twenty nine colors. The Arles reference (inspiration for much of Van Gogh's work, and home at various points to Picasso, Gaugin, and Jacques Réattu) reveals Morley's penchant for art history reference in his art. Malcolm Morley, Arles/Miami, 1973. A portfolio of five lithographs. All stones and plates were drawn by the artist and the editions pulled at the Shorewood Atelier in New York. Each edition consists of 150 lithographs on Arches paper plus 25 Artist's Proofs on Rives BFK paper. Portfolio 63/150. Shorewood Atelier. Each lithograph is signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. A copy of this portfolio is in the collection of MoMa, New York, Yale University Art Gallery, Connecticut, Harvard Art Museums, Boston, Minneapolis Institute of Art Collection, Minneapolis, and Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn. "MIAMI SILVER" - Twenty-one colors printed from five stones and one plate. 23¼" × 34. "MIAMI POSTCARD...
