About the Item
"Replay 4" is a unique hand-painted monoprint. The artist's ink drawing made on translucent film was etched into a copper plate using the technique of photogravure. The plate became a repeatable matrix for the print series. Impressions were printed from the plate in varying colors and Petley hand-colored each print using stencils and acrylic paints applied with a mouth atomizer. "Replay 4" also has additions of graphite and colored pencil. The print is titled, signed and dated on the back, lower margin in pencil.
The prints in the "Replay" series are published by and available exclusively from Manneken Press.

Kate Petley
Kate Petley’s image-making process is guided by a will to transform. In her paintings and prints Petley harnesses physiological responses to color and light, inviting feelings of joy, quietude and wonder. Her works on canvas belong to a long lineage of painters concerned with the luminous surface as a space for absorption, a space increasingly usurped by the ever-present backlit screen. Petley has been featured in thirty solo exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at the University of Colorado Art Museum in 2021, and has completed numerous public commissions and installations. She participated in PhotoIreland 2017 and is a Ucross Foundation Fellowship recipient. Petley was a recipient of an NEA Rockefeller Foundation Grant in 1990, and has been awarded residencies at Mayer of Munich Glass studio in Germany and Platteforum Denver. Her work has been exhibited at MCA Denver, the Museum of South Texas, the Nicolaysen Museum, Fotofest Houston, the Martin Museum at Baylor University, Museum of the Southwest, and the Arlington Museum of Art.

- Old GloryBy Judy LedgerwoodLocated in Bloomington, IL"Old Glory" is a unique monotype from a series of prints by Judy Ledgerwood published by Manneken Press in 2020. Rather than using ink, the artist painted directly on a sanded acrylic plate with watercolor paints. The impervious surface of the plate allowed the paint to flow, pool, settle and dry in ways that are distinct from painting in an unmediated manner on paper. When dry, the plate was printed onto damp Hahnemühle Copperplate paper; the moisture in the paper reactivated the watercolor paint and the pressure exerted by the press transferred the image, resulting in a one-of-a-kind monotype print. In "Old Glory" Ledgerwood alludes to the American flag in its rectangular format and red, white and blue color scheme. The artist's signature, title and date are verso, in pencil, and the Manneken Press blindstamp is impressed into the lower left corner of the print. Since the 1980’s Judy Ledgerwood has been exploring light, color, and space in paintings that combine the formal vocabulary of concrete abstraction with influences from pop culture to create vividly colored compositions. She combines decorative patterning, elements of textile design and other traditionally female crafts, with bold color and assertive brush strokes, traits associated with the historically male-dominated tradition of gestural abstraction. Often using stereotypically “feminine” elements, such as pastel colors and stylized floral patterns, Ledgerwood merges formalist and feminist concerns in works that are both sensual and subversive, with the ability to resonate beyond their initial impact. Judy Ledgerwood has received awards from The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts; and Illinois Art Council. Ledgerwood has also received an Artadia Award and a Tiffany Award...Category
