About the Item

An expressive, moody abstract composition in red, with Mark Tobey’s soft, calligraphy-inspired mark-making reminiscent of water and bubbles flowing upward. Mark Tobey, Underwater Fragment (red) 1973 sheet 26 15/16 in x 9 ¾ in / 68.42 cm x 24.77 cm Lithograph Edition 20 with 12 AP; this copy AP 7/12 A copy of this print is in the collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art. John Cage once said of going on a walk with Mark Tobey: "It was the first time that someone else had given me a lesson in looking without prejudice, someone who didn't compare what he was seeing with something before, who was sensitive to the finest nuances of light. Tobey would stop on the sidewalks, sidewalks which we normally didn't notice when we were walking, and his gaze would immediately turn them into a work of art. He was attentive to the slightest detail. For him, everything was alive. He had an extraordinary sense of the presence of things."

  • Arles/Miami by Malcolm Morley Miami beach postcard portfolio Van Gogh Arles
    By Malcolm Morley
    Located in New York, NY
These colorful, exuberant and expressionistic works depict a series of hand-drawn Miami beach and tourism postcards in various states of permutation and collapse, at times curling in on themselves and dissolving into glorious, saturated scribbles, the final piece printed with shimmering silver in twenty nine colors. The Arles reference (inspiration for much of Van Gogh's work, and home at various points to Picasso, Gaugin, and Jacques Réattu) reveals Morley's penchant for art history reference in his art. Malcolm Morley, Arles/Miami, 1973. A portfolio of five lithographs. All stones and plates were drawn by the artist and the editions pulled at the Shorewood Atelier in New York. Each edition consists of 150 lithographs on Arches paper plus 25 Artist's Proofs on Rives BFK paper. Portfolio 63/150. Shorewood Atelier. Each lithograph is signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. • Summertime in Italy (With Lines)
    By Robert Motherwell
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), alongside Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, made up the quartet of American abstract painters that radically defined abstraction and established New York City as the center of the art world for the second half of the 20th century. Motherwell was also the unofficial spokesman of the New York School, writing, teaching, and lecturing on behalf of the movement, his fellow artists, and the merits of abstraction. His work appears in museum collections around the world and is instantly recognizable for its boldness and black forms. Yet in addition to his impressive paintings, Motherwell is also revered as a printmaker. He is one of the most innovative and prolific printmakers of the 20th century. He was always searching for new techniques, whether at his own printmaking atelier or collaborating with others, to expand his ideas and express his aesthetic. In the 1960s, Motherwell visited Italy on vacation with his then-wife, Helen Frankenthaler. Motherwell became enamoured with the Italianate landscape and the mountainous terrain of the Liguria region, which inspired a series of paintings, "Summertime in Italy...
