David Barnett
'Giant Hybrid Hibiscus Butterfly' signed artist's proof I/XXV giclée print

2005

About the Item

‘Giant Hybrid Hibiscus Butterfly’ is an artist’s proof giclée print on watercolor paper after the 2003 original, signed and dated by the artist in the lower right. The composition emphasizes morphological play as the viewer observes a butterfly transform into a hibiscus flower and back again. The butterfly’s petal-wings are adorned with floral designs, creating a pictorial palimpsest of Barnett’s hybrid insect-flower imagery. A pair of whorling plumes below the butterfly resemble a pair of eyes, further blurring the boundaries between flora and fauna. Through his subtle experimentation with abstraction, Barnett deftly captures the constant fluctuations of the butterfly’s form. Giclée print on watercolor paper after original 2003 oil pastel and watercolor AP I/XXV 9.5 x 7.5 inches, artwork 18.375 x 17.375 inches, frame Signed and dated in lower right "AP I/XXV" written in lower left Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting, UF5 Plexiglas to inhibit fading, and housed in a gold finish wood moulding. David Barnett, an artist, collector, appraiser and gallerist has been passionate about art from the early age of five. David’s career as an art dealer began at age nineteen when, as a fine arts student, he sponsored an exhibition of work by fellow student artists. In 1966, he opened his first gallery in a converted basement apartment at Wisconsin Avenue and 21st Street. In 1985 David moved his gallery from Wisconsin Avenue into the Old Button Mansion on State Street and has been active ever since. David’s talents for recognizing undervalued artists and for meeting the needs of art lovers, art collectors and artists have created a vibrant, flourishing gallery and collection of over 6,000 works of art. David was born and raised in Wisconsin. He has been painting in watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels as well as fine art photography. David has more than 10 different series he has developed over the years. They include Abstract, Surrealism, Morph Dog, Up North Birch Bark, Impressions of Mexico City, Southwest, Fireworks, Famous Artist Paying Homage and Garden Panorama. Influential artists include Vermeer, Miro, Kandinsky, Chagall, Nolde and Klee. David has been featured in many magazines, newspapers and public television programs regarding his beautiful gallery, collection and knowledge and passion of fine art. David also has work in the permanent collection Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona. Since its opening in 1966, The David Barnett Gallery has flourished to become Wisconsin's premier gallery and has the most diverse range of art available in any Wisconsin gallery, including works of art that represent more than 600 artists. The gallery also offers custom framing, art appraisals, installation services, consulting services and more. David Barnett has been appraising art as an accredited member of the Appraisers Association of America since 1975 and he is one of approximately only 2,000 personal property appraisers in the United States with the Uniformed Standards of Professional Appraiser Practice Certification. The David Barnett Gallery specializes in European and American masters, regional and nationally recognized artists, and "emerging" Wisconsin artists. Latin American, Asian, and African American artists also adorn the gallery along with Ethnographic art from Africa, Indonesia, and Oceania. The gallery has a national reputation for its extensive collection of Picasso ceramics and Milton Avery oil paintings.

  • Izzy with her Ball, Dog Art, Affordable Art, Contemporary Animal Art Print

Izzy, a charming characterful terrier stands alert, holding her ball in her mouth. Colour etching hand made and printed by the artist. Helen Fay's art for sale online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. I am really excited by composition, by artists like Bonnard and Leon Spilliaert. I have long been a fan of Munch for his direct mark-making, colour and intensity and at the other end of the spectrum, Hammershoi for his limited palette, sense of space and calm. I am interested in black and white photography and film and have recently discovered and been amazed by the films of Yasujiro Ozu...
