About the Item

Mervyn Jules studied at Baltimore City College and the Maryland Institute College of Art before moving to New York City and continuing his art education at the Art Students League of New York under the tutelage of, among others, Thomas Hart Benton. Jules was a Works Progress Administration artist in the 1930s, as a silk screen artist and printmaker - the work for which he is best remembered. He was an artist-in-residence and later an instructor at Smith College, then chairman of the art department at City College of New York. He was also an accomplished writer on the visual arts. This fanciful and charming lithograph bursts with character and color. It borrows elements from narrative media like illustration and comic books - uncommon for fine artists in the 1940s.
