About the Item

Photo offset Japan-USA 1984-91 Passe-Partout is inclusive Christo (Christo Wladimirow Jawaschew, born 1935 in Bulgaria, died 2020 in New York) and Jeanne-Claude (Jeanne-Claude Marie Denat, born 1935 in Casablanca, died 2009 in New York) created a number of world-famous installations as an artist couple. With 'L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped' (18 September - 03 October 2021), Christo and Jeanne-Claude's last project was realised posthumously. As an artist collective, the pair realised monumental sculptures and installations for over 45 years, often draping and/or wrapping large sections of landscapes, industrial objects and buildings with a special type of fabric. An important part of the large-scale projects were preliminary drawings, project sketches and objects, and later photographic documentation, which were sold by Christo and Jeanne-Claude to finance the costly projects from the beginning. The installations, on the other hand, were always temporary and the materials recycled afterwards. In the sense of an ecological aesthetic, the works have their legitimacy purely in memory, dedicated to the ephemeral and transient, by not adding more monuments to an already crowded world. With wrapping projects that have transformed buildings and landscapes into abstract objects, such as'Wrapped Coast', Australia, 'The Pont Neuf, Wrapped', Paris, France or 'The Gates - New York Central Park', Christo and Jeanne-Claude have gained worldwide attention and fame as 'wrapping artists'.

  • AS FAR AS A VIEW - Folded Tapestry Collage of Scenic Landscapes w/ Palm Trees
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
AS FAR AS A VIEW, is part of a series of works that consider the decorative and escapist role of the landscape in the home. When seeking beauty in the world to distract us, delight us, and bring us into our own world, we seek something that stirs within us a memory or a dream. Traditionally, tapestries are a storytelling media as well as décor. This particular work is constructed from commercially printed tapestries acquired from a Chinese supplier during the pandemic. These tell a story of arrested, yet ample, desire. On one side of the piece we see a sunrise from a beach with palm trees. Gently folded over to the right is a second tapestry. In this the artist has chose to expose the desaturated backside which obscures slightly the third tapestry landscape of beach scene around midday. It brings to mind the passage of time much like time lapse photography...

  • Twilight's Path, 030, Moonrise - Midsummer full moon - skeletal oak - landscape
    Located in London, GB
The midsummer full moon casts its pale light over the skeletal remains of a deceased oak. Twilight's Path ‘Now air is hushed, save where the weak-eyed bat With short shrill shriek flits by on leathern wing, Or where the beetle winds His small but sullen horn As oft he rises 'midst the twilight path Against the pilgrim, borne in heedless hum’ – William Collins (1721–1759), Ode to Evening. "Once in a while (helped by a bit of planning) everything comes together and you take a photograph that feels really satisfying. However much one reads about artists/photographers trying and failing, taking many shots to end up with that one that works, it’s hard to remember. Just keep showing up, keep doing what you do, it won’t always work out, but sometimes things flow and something special can come through." - Jasper Goodall...
