Pieta is part of the Holy Works series by Serrano. From the very beginning of his artistic career, sacred icons were among key elements in his work, which comes as a result of the artist's own religious reflections. Serrano is known for the use of unconventional medium and challenging imagery as in his famous Piss Christ. Through his photographs, Serrano often reconciles the sacred and the profane. Holy Works series present a new development in Serrano's work, where he set off to explore the language of the silhouette.
"There is only one thing that I am looking for – Beauty." —Andres Serrano
Drawn to the aesthetics of Renaissance art, Pieta refers to Michelangelo's sculpture as his subject. The figure in the center is not given lightly, only the background is illuminated, thus there is only the silhouette of what is meant to be the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. This print comes together with a Collector's Edition.
ANDRES SERRANO
Serrano is notorious for his use of human corpses and bodily fluids to produce his controversial images. His´s works examine the fundamentals of aesthetics and social perception.
Serrano is from a half Honduran, half Afro-Cuban background and was raised as a strict Roman Catholic. He studied from 1967 to 1969 at the Brooklyn Museum and Art School. Later he worked as assistant art director at an advertising firm, before creating his first works in 1983.
"I like to believe that rather than destroy icons, I make new ones." —Andres Serrano
The artist rose to prominence with his work "Piss Christ", a photograph of a crucifix submerged in a glass container of what was purported to be the artist's own urine. The work caused a storm of controversy and was the central element in the so-called culture wars of the late 1980s and 1990s. While Serrano's most famous and notorious work examines the fundamentals of aesthetics, it also challenges the social perception through beautiful images, which are often created from vulgar and sometimes repulsive materials.

Andres Serrano
Born 1950, New York City; lives and works in New York City. Since the mid 1980s, Andres Serrano has been one of the most famous active American photographers. Serrano studied sculpture and painting at the Brooklyn Museum and Art School from 1967-1969 and began creating photography in the early 1980s. His training in painting and sculpture, along with his strict Roman Catholic upbringing, would play a major role in shaping his work. Serrano’s photography often evokes both striking physicality and spirituality. He is well known for creating large scale images that incorporate bodily fluids and religious iconography. One of Serrano’s most famous and controversial images, Piss Christ (1987), depicted a plastic crucifix submerged in urine. Though not intended to shock, his work is nevertheless emotionally provocative. In spite of the controversy surrounding some of his images, Serrano’s original style has made him one of the most influential contemporary photographers. Serrano’s work is featured in the permanent collections of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Amsterdam; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, to name a few.

- Backyard Garden, Yue Minjun - Art, Lithograph, Limited Edition, China Art, PrintBy Yue MinjunLocated in Zug, CHYue Minjun, Backyard Garden Contemporary, 21st Century, Lithograph, Limited Edition, Chinese Lithograph Edition of 130 80 x 120 cm (47 1/5 × 31 1/2 in) Stamped Signature, numbered in Roman numerals In mint condition, as acquired from the publisher PLEASE NOTE: Edition numbers could vary from the one shown in the pictures. The pictures shown are only for illustrative reasons, the piece is offered unframed. The print is mounted on double sheet of paper with a poem on one spread and print on the other. Backyard Garden belongs to the set of twenty lithographs from the “Snatched Ecstasy of Yue Minjun”, which comes as a limited edition of 130 rare books. The work of Yue Minjun is instantly recognizable with its uniform laughing faces, the artist's faces. Minjun creates various realities against which the laughing figures are rendered, thus creating ambiguous images, often with the sinister atmosphere, which comes as his personal cynical reaction to various social and political dimensions of contemporary Chinese realities. Immediately humorous and sympathetic, Yue Minjun’s paintings offer a light-hearted approach to philosophical enquiry and contemplation of existence. Yue’s self-portraits have been describe by theorist Li Xianting as “a self-ironic response to the spiritual vacuum and folly of modern-day China”, thus the acidic tones and commercialized vacuity of his works are used to underscore the insincerity of his figures’ mirth. “Art should be an expression of one's particular feelings and should be direct and deep. So I drew one person, and then added another and another until there were crowds of them. Then I felt my emotions to be fully expressed.„ —Yue Minjun YUE MINJUN Yue Min-Jun (born 1962, Daqing, China) is one of the leading Chinese artists. He is best known for oil paintings depicting formations of his laughing self-portraits in various settings. His iconography is easily recognisable, it challenges social and cultural conventions by depicting objects and political issues in a radical, abstract, ironic and cynical manner. Yue Min-Jun initially started painting as a hobby, subsequently he graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Hebei Normal University, China in 1985. In the 90s he joined an artist community in Yuan Ming...Category

Edition 3 of 6 (LB011) Lluís Barba reworks iconic artworks to comment on contemporary society, introducing modern characters into Hyeronimus Bosch’s or Pieter Brueghel’s medieval scenes. His work leverages the language of artistic symbolism to critique both modern society and the art world. Utilising society darlings such as Paris Hilton and Kate Moss, art world players such as Jay Jopling and music icons such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna, Barba expresses his debt to Art History and contemporary culture through a satirical and humorous slant. Born in Spain and educated at the Escola Massana Centre d’Art, Barcelona, Barba has exhibited his work in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Canada.
