Claude Weisbuch
'Le Condottiere' original signed lithograph poster, knight on horseback 1970s

1978

About the Item

This poster, produced for the 1978 International Meeting of Fine Art Dealers in Washington, features prominently one of Claude Weisbuch's dynamic images: Le Condottiere. It is an original color lithograph advertising his new works, and is one of only twenty-five that bears the artist's signature in the lower right. In line with Weisbuch's interest in the Renaissance and Baroque in Europe, this image looks back to the early modern period. Condottieri were Italian captains that were tasked with leading armies for kings and popes in wars of religion. Weisbuch brings out the energy of the horse and rider, both leaning dramatically to one side. The horse seems to snarl at the viewer as it rears and the Condettiere sits firm and strong, unmoved by the power of the horse. 29.75 x 21.13 inches, poster 38 x 29.63 inches, frame Signed and dated lower right Inscribed "Stand 11401" lower right International Meeting of Fine Art Dealers logo, lower right Inscribed "Vision Nouvelle" lower left Publisher inscription "Atellier Gourdon - Paris" bottom center Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting, and housed in a gold finish wood moulding. Claude Weisbuch was born in Thionville, France in 1927 and was a pupil at L' École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, France. As a painter, engraver, and exceptional lithographer, Claude Weisbuch has painted active motifs, such as musicians, horses, characters. Dominating in his work, by the relief and the velvety line which characterizes drypoint, his etchings are the strongest representations of his figures, intensely lively after 1960s. Using dark tones which express his sharp sense, Claude Weisbuch ceaselessly captures life's dynamics, as the pictorial, musical and literary expressions that are essentially human. Whether it is the impassioned violinist, the mercurial actor, or the sitter shrouded with silent intensity, they have all been rendered with Weisbuch's love for drama. The brushstrokes are sweeping and bold while the paint is fluid. His pictures, full of movement, give one the impression of time-lapsed motion, and display an expression of passionate humanity tinged with a unique energy.
